The final season of Criminal Minds premiered to the delight of fans everywhere. A major question looming over everyone going into season 15 was what would happen between Jennifer “JJ” Jareau (A.J. Cook) and Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler). Read on to find out what happened in the premiere between the two best friends. There are spoilers ahead.

JJ made a startling confession in the finale of season 14

In the finale of season 14, JJ revealed that she’s always loved Reid while they are held at gunpoint. The revelation brought a lot of backlash from fans, although the situation needed to be addressed further in season 15.

The hunt for Everett Lynch (Michael Mosley), or the Chameleon starts things off. The premiere involves Lynch breaking his daughter out of prison. He then finds JJ in a garage and entices his own daughter to shoot her.

JJ and Reid finally talk

Thankfully Reid finds JJ and gets her to a hospital. The terrible ordeal allows the two to reconnect and talk about things after some time has passed. Things have been awkward between them and not how they used to be before the startling revelation. Although JJ was being honest about her feelings, she isn’t about to leave her husband, Will (Josh Stewart) for Reid in the end.

Reid could have a happy future ahead of him

However, there seems to be a glimmer of hope for Reid’s future love prospects. TV Guide spoke to showrunner Erica Messer about what the future looks like for Reid in a world where he isn’t going to be dating JJ. Reid will soon be enjoying a normal day off and he’ll meet someone new.

“In the episode titled, ‘Saturday,’ which will air sort of midseason, middle of the final 10 [episodes], it [asks], what does the team do on a day off?” Messer explained. “We discover that Reid has been in therapy and some of it is a mandate and some of it is he’s been having this recurring nightmare. Some of it is J.J. related. The therapist sort of says, ‘You need to find out what makes you happy and go have a normal day.’ And he’s like, ‘I don’t know what that is.’”

Reid will meet Max in an upcoming episode

While enjoying a seemingly usual day in the park, Reid will meet someone new to get his mind off the JJ drama, at least for now. He’s going to meet Max and hopefully things will fall into place for the two of them.

“We all have a hard time imagining what is a normal day for Dr. Reid,” Messer continued. “Then he goes and has a normal day. And in this normal day at a park, he meets Rachel Leigh Cook’s character, who sort of shows him what a normal day, a normal life, a normal everything could look like. It’s just this little ray of sunshine that comes into Reid’s world. Everybody who’s been cheering on Reid all these years gets to see him smile in a way that they’ve never seen before. It’s lovely and it’s well deserved.”

Fans are glad that the situation between Reid and JJ wasn’t just brushed over. Hopefully now they can go back to being best friends and things won’t be weird between them anymore.
