There are plenty of memorable moments throughout the eight seasons of Dance Moms. The hit Lifetime reality TV show gained extremely popularity shortly after it premiered and made many of the cast members household names. Of course, two of the show’s fan favorites were sisters, Maddie Ziegler and Kenzie Ziegler and one of the show’s biggest moments surrounded them both.

Dance Moms fans will recall that Maddie was the favorite at the Abby Lee Dance Company (ALDC). The Fallout star had an overwhelming passion for dance and that, coupled with her perfectionist tendencies, led her to win tons of first-place trophies at various competitions. As the series progressed, it became nearly impossible for anyone on the Junior Elite Competition Team to beat Maddie. However, in Season 5, Kenzie managed to nab the first place spot over her sister in a head-to-head solo competition.

Naturally, the win was a big moment for Kenzie. Throughout her time on Dance Moms, she was constantly compared to her older sister. Abby Lee Miller was especially brutal in demanding that she dance more like Maddie and be more like Maddie. Once, Kenzie even had to perform one of Maddie’s old solos, and the show did a side-by-side comparison of their performances. Though Kenzie is a talented dancer, with her own strengths, she was constantly pitted against her sister, so it was a huge deal for her to finally win.

At the time, Maddie was not pleased that her little sister had beaten her. Now, however, she is very proud of Kenzie. In a recent interview with Elite Daily, the Ziegler sisters reflected on the memorable Dance Moms moment. “There was that time we competed in the same category for solos, and you beat me— you got first place, and I got second,” Maddie remembers. “I was like, ‘I cannot believe this. She beat me. She’s younger than me.’ It was really hard for me to get over. Now looking back, I’m like, ‘That is amazing. She deserved that. Her dance was better.’”

Kenzie recalled the moment too, stating that she handled it like a typical younger sibling and bragged about her win. “I did rub it in your face, but I had every right to because it would never happen again,” the “Donuts” singer shared. “I remember writing on my trophy, ‘I beat Maddie with this trophy,’ and you were so mad, and I was like, ‘You’re going to beat me next week.'”

It’s great that the sisters have moved on from the drama of the show and that they now both have fond memories of Kenzie’s win. These days the pair are closer than ever and while they both still dance, they both have their own niches within the performing arts that are completely independent of one another also. While Maddie has leaned into acting, Kenzie is exploring music. We’re sure Dance Moms fans can’t wait to see what the Zieglers do next.
