Emily in Paris has taken Netflix by storm. Hailed as the Sex and the City of the millennial generation, the series is enjoying some initial success. That comes as no surprise, though. Darren Star, the show’s creator, has had more than a few hit shows during his long career. Star is responsible for bringing Sex and the City to life on HBO in the 1990s and early 2000s. Even with the success of Emily in Paris, Star recently admitted that one Sex and the City character is still his absolute favorite.

What is Emily in Paris about?

Emily in Paris follows Emily Cooper as she upends her life for a career opportunity. The 20-something Emily is working in Chicago when she is asked to move to Paris to help bring an American perspective to a French firm her company acquired.

Emily’s initial goal is to get back home to her life and her boyfriend, but as she makes friends and begins to experience Paris, her dreams are likely to change. The series’ first season was released on Oct 2, 2020. There are currently 10 episodes, although Netflix is expected to greenlight the series for more.

How is the show similar to Sex and the City?

Part of the show’s charm is its connection to Sex and the City. Since its debut just a few days ago, fans have been quick to point out that the series seems to have a lot in common with its beloved HBO predecessor. A focus on fashion and style connects Emily in Paris to Sex in the City. Star’s attempt to tell the story of people coming of age in a changing world is similar, too. Critics, however, claim the connections stop there.

Film Daily argues that Star’s latest venture fails to capture the grittiness present in Sex and the City. The publication claims that Emily in Paris is a touch too “Pinterest” to be compared to Sex and the City. Whether or not Emily in Paris is the next Sex and the City remains to be seen. Regardless, Star has made it pretty clear that his favorite character isn’t present in the new series.

Darren Star admits that Carrie Bradshaw is his favorite character

Star’s storied career has allowed him to craft many different characters. He, however, recently admitted that he connects the most with Carrie Bradshaw. In an interview with Buzzfeed, the famed TV producer said, “ I relate to Carrie the most on Sex and the City just because she’s a writer. And so it’s easy to put myself in the shoes of a writer, in the head and the mind of a writer. So, in terms of thinking about the world from a writer’s point of view, and that there was so much voiceover in that narrative, and that show that was written, I certainly understood how she was looking at the world.”
