David Harbour gushes over working with Winona Ryder on ‘Stranger Things’

It’s safe to say the chemistry between Joyce and Hopper wouldn’t exist without the sizzling spark between the actors who portray the Hawkins guardians on Stranger Things. And according to Harbour, Ryder was his high school crush while growing up in real life!

“She was my high school crush with Heathers and Beetlejuice. She’s such a great person to work with,” Harbour reveals. He continues, saying that working with his movie star crush is “like a dream.”

And in a separate interview, during a panel in Phoenix, Harbour continued to spill about his relationship with Ryder.

He said, “Winona gets very personal very quick… So we were almost like an old married couple right after I’d met her.”

Harbour continues, saying, “We would bicker like an old married couple, but we’d also share these really lovely moments. I certainly know for myself that my performance doesn’t work without her. Without her and her performance, my performance doesn’t make sense if that was another actress. I’m so grateful for what she brings, and all the heart and passion that she brings to her work.”

It turns out Harbour is the biggest Winona Ryder fan of all time. In an Instagram post with the two actors smiling from ear to ear, Harbour writes about how meaningful their connection is.

“I lucked into acting with this beautiful, beyond talented movie star on a daily basis, and it’s been one of the most loving, inspiring working relationships I’ve ever had.”

Later, while speaking with The LA Times, Harbour confessed how hard it was not to fall in love with Ryder while filming the series.

“I do feel like there are moments where you fall in love with Winona,” Harbour admits. “It feels like a marriage, where we’re willing to go the distance in that way that gets really uncomfortable. I want to do a scene with Winona where I get so messed up that I have to go back to my trailer and cry.”

According to Harbour, he always adores working with Ryder because she is willing to take risks as an actor that most people wouldn’t ever take.

He says,

“I’m so hungry to work with Winona because she’s willing to cut me and be cut, and we’ll bleed together. And that’s a rare thing… She’s the greatest,” Harbour says of his co-star. “She’s so willing to explore personal, intimate things that most actors get to a certain point and go, ‘That’s enough.’ And it’s exploring things about yourself that you don’t necessarily like, the complexities of the human psyche, which is messed up and strange and wonderful and mysterious and horrible.”
