It’s hard to imagine cooler parents than Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell. Aside from the fact that they’re famous, Shepard and Bell just ooze cool. That’s hard to do for parents in their late 30s and early 40s.

Now that they have kids, Shepard and Bell have gone from #relationshipgoals to #parentinggoals. They’re still as close as ever as a couple, and it seems like they’re parenting their kids the right way.

They’re generous enough to share their parenting tips with fans, but some of them are very unconventional

Dax Shepard would let his kids drink, smoke marijuana, and do shrooms

In a recent episode of Armchair Expert, Shepard’s podcast, he had an interesting conversation with Rob Lowe. Somehow, Lowe and Shepard started talking about kids and drugs.

Both actors are fathers. Shepard has two daughters with Bell. Lincoln is 7, and their daughter Delta is 5. Lowe has older children. His sons are already out of the house.

On the podcast, Shepard revealed that he would have no problem with his kids doing some drugs, but not others. In fact, it seems like he may even encourage them to do drugs when they’re old enough.

Apparently Shepard believes that people who try shrooms are more creative later in life, so he says he is “pro my children doing mushrooms at some point.”

It doesn’t stop there, however. He wouldn’t mind if they smoke weed, or drink either.

“I’m gonna tell my girls to do shrooms and to smoke pot and to drink, and just don’t do cocaine or opioids,” said the actor.

Shepard feels that weed and alcohol are less addictive. In his own experience, cocaine and opioids led him to a substance abuse problem.

Because of his experiences with addiction, Shepard thinks his kids would be fine smoking pot, drinking, and doing shrooms. If they dip into cocaine or opioids, though, they could end up having to fight for their sobriety.

According to Shepard, by avoiding cocaine and opioids, “you’ll likely be able to do all the other ones for the rest of your life. But if you get involved with those two, it’s probably gonna end the party — or, at least, it did for me.”

Even though his addiction issues ended the party for Shepard, that doesn’t mean sobriety isn’t fun. Bell takes her husband’s sobriety seriously and makes sure his sober birthday — the anniversary of his sobriety- is a special occasion.

According to Shepard, Bell “spoils” him with gifts on his special day. He said: “The nicest presents she’s gotten me are always on my sober birthday. In fact, my real birthday … still haven’t gotten a present!”

Since Bell makes a big deal out of Shepard’s sober birthday, his kids probably know what it’s all about. If they ever ask, however, Shepard will tell them the truth about his history with addiction.

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard don’t lie to their children

Shepard would never sugar coat his struggles with opioids and cocaine for his children. He and Bell never lie to their kids about anything. It’s part of their very unique parenting style. They tell their kids the truth, no matter what they ask about. They don’t “dumb it down” for their daughters.

Even when Shepard and Bell’s daughter asked where babies come from, they gave her an honest answer. Shepard launched into a “very clinical” explanation of how babies were made. Apparently it was so boring that “halfway through the second sentence, she got bored and walked outside.”

So when Shepard says he would let his kids do certain drugs, it seems credible. He gives them that level of freedom, at least now. It’s possible that Shepard and Bell will change their tune when the girls are older.
