How Demi’s broken engagement led her to realize her sexuality

Lovato’s most famous relationship was with That ’70s Show actor Wilmer Valderrama, who she dated for six years. After breaking up with him in 2016, Lovato didn’t have any serious, public relationships until she began dating actor Max Ehrich in Mar. 2020. Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Lovato and Ehrich’s relationship moved pretty fast as they quarantined together. The two got engaged just months after starting a relationship.

“Honestly, what happened? I think I rushed into something that I thought was what I was supposed to do,” she said in the documentary. “I realized as time went on that I didn’t actually know the person that I was engaged to.”

“It’s just, like, of course that accelerated. I didn’t even have my best friends to hang out with in quarantine,” she added. “The hardest part of the breakup was mourning the person I thought he was.”

After the breakup, Ehrich was strangely public about his feelings and some fans accused him of milking the breakup for attention.

“I mean, I was just as shocked as the rest of the world at some of the things that were said and done,” Lovato said of how things panned out after the split. But the breakup ended up being a blessing in disguise for the singer.

“I feel like I’m actually too queer to marry a man in my life right now,” she said. “I’m not willing to put a label on it right this second, and I think I will get there, but there’s a lot of things that I have to do for myself first. I want to allow myself the ability to live my life in the most authentic form possible.”

Demi Lovato is pansexual

Though Lovato wasn’t ready to put a label on her sexuality during her documentary, she recently revealed that she is “pansexual” on Saturday’s episode of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

“I don’t know, I’m so fluid now, and a part of the reason why I am so fluid is because I was super closeted off,” she said.

When Rogan asked if that meant she was pansexual, Lovato responded, “Yeah, pansexual.”

Lovato first noticed that she had an attraction to women while watching Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar kiss in Cruel Intentions.

“I was like, ‘Oh, I like that,’ ” she said. “But I felt a lot of shame because growing up in Texas as a Christian, that’s very frowned upon.”

“Any attraction I had to a female at a young age, I shut it down before I even let myself process what I was feeling,” she continued.

Now, Lovato is open to exploring her sexuality

“This past year, I was engaged to a man and when it didn’t work, I was like, ‘This is a huge sign,'” the singer told Glamour earlier this month. “I thought I was going to spend my life with someone. Now that I wasn’t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth.”
