Singer Demi Lovato fell in love, got engaged, and called off her engagement to actor Max Ehrich all in one year. That’s a lot for anyone to go through, but she’s expected to comment on what happened as someone in the public eye. Here’s what Lovato said about letting her music tell her story.

Lovato and Ehrich started dating in March 2020. They attempted to keep their relationship quiet for a couple of months — however, those who saw their comments on Instagram and her appearance on his Instagram Live caught on earlier. They confirmed their relationship in May 2020.

After less than five months of dating, Ehrich proposed to Lovato at the beach, marking the second anniversary of her 2018 overdose. Lovato accepted, but they were engaged for less than two months. In September 2020, Lovato and Ehrich broke up while the latter was filming a movie across the country.

After they broke up, she released ‘Still Have Me’

When they split, Lovato did not make a public show of it. Instead, she simply deleted her Instagram posts featuring Ehrich, who later did the same on his account. What Lovato did do was go into the studio. “Music is always there for me,” she tweeted on September 30, adding, “song in the am.”

After “Still Have Me” debuted, Lovato wrote on Twitter, “I should be sleeping but life can be hard and weird and keeps me awake sometimes.. BUT I’m so glad I checked my mentions. Your support has me in literal tears. Thank you guys so much.. I’m beyond grateful for your love – I LOVE YOU.”

Lovato hasn’t made a public statement about the split

The singer kept herself busy in the days and weeks that followed her breakup. Though Ehrich has spoken about her and their relationship on his Instagram Stories, Lovato hasn’t done the same. Instead, she’s given interviews about her music and the other things going on in her life — including a possible extraterrestrial sighting.

In October 2020, Lovato got on stage for the first time since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Following weeks of encouraging her U.S. fans to vote in the presidential election, she debuted a new song, “Commander in Chief,” at the Billboard Music Awards, aimed at President Donald Trump.

Lovato alluded to her past relationship in a November 2020 interview. “I think the most important thing I learned [this year] is how much I am OK with myself and loving myself,” she told Today host Jenna Bush Hager. When the host asked her specifically about “Still Have Me,” Lovato again refrained from mentioning Ehrich.

“When I write my songs, when I go to the studio to record them, it is a very cathartic, therapeutic experience for me,” she said. “So, anytime I go through something, especially when I don’t say things publicly or comment on situations, I let the music comment on it. And that’s actually as far as I will comment on a situation.”
