Prince Harry has been known to have a good relationship with his brother, Prince William, and sister-in-law, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Before Harry got married in 2018, he could be seen spending a lot of time with them, and the three royals became a dynamic trio.

However, was there a time when Harry wanted a different sister-in-law than Kate? In an interview dug up from 2011, it seems he might have wanted a “younger” person to join their family.

Prince Harry and Kate Middleton became close after she started dating Prince William

William and Kate met in the early 2000s as students at the University of St. Andrews, and Kate met Harry soon after she started dating William.

After William and Kate got married in 2011, Kate became a part of both brothers’ lives. According to Newsweek, Harry referred to her as “the big sister he never had.”

“He often pops into their apartment at Kensington Palace, where she cooks him a meal—roast chicken is reportedly a particular favorite,” the outlet said.

The trio also spent a lot of time together and could be seen side by side at events.

Did Harry say he wanted a ‘younger’ sister-in-law instead of Kate?

As reported by the Telegraph, a few months before William and Kate tied the knot, Harry publicly commented on his brother’s upcoming nuptials and the prospect of welcoming Kate into the family.

When speaking about having Kate as a sister, he said, “A younger brother or younger sister would have been nicer, but to have a big sister is obviously very, very nice.”

The prince also continued by sharing that he and Kate were quite chummy. He revealed, ”I’ve got to know Kate pretty well, but now that she’s becoming part of the family, I’m really looking forward to getting her under my wing – or she’ll be taking me under her wing probably.”

”She’s a fantastic girl. She really is,” Harry added. “My brother’s very lucky, and she’s very lucky to have my brother. I think the two of them are a perfect match.”

Although Harry and Kate seemed quite close back then, there are reports that the two of them have been growing apart, especially since tension arose between William and Harry.

Sources say William and Harry have always had different personalities, though things went downhill for their relationship when Meghan, Duchess of Sussex came into the picture. When Harry introduced Meghan to his family after having only dated her or a short period of time, William raised concerns about his brother moving too fast.

However, Harry went “ballistic” and felt his relationship was being attacked. As reported by Us Weekly, royal expert Katie Nicholl explained, “Harry supported William from the outset of his relationship with Kate and he felt very let down that he wasn’t getting his brother’s full 100 percent support with the relationship with Meghan.”

Writer Anna Pasternak wrote in a Tatler article that Kate did try to mend the princes’ relationship, though it was difficult for her to be on Harry’s side completely.

“As the rift got deeper between the brothers, Kate, who used to be so close to Harry, tried to pacify things. But her loyalty will always be to William,” Pasternak said.
