Despite a bit of a rough start, the group of superheroes who make up The Avengers end up being great friends in the films.

Yes, they bicker sometimes because of their clashing personalities, but at the end of each day they’re there to support one another. It’s a necessity, really. Division among them could spell the end for everyone in the midst of a battle.

But what about the actors behind those superheroes? We know that some of them are great friends in real life – sometimes spanning back to before the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it ever began. But do any of them not get along in real life? Here’s what we know.

Robert Downey Jr. and Terrence Howard

The man behind Iron Man and the guy who portrayed his close friend in the first Iron Man movie did not get along. Howard claims that he felt mistreated on set, and a lot of that mistreatment was said to have stemmed from Downey.

The tensions between the two actors was so heavy that the part of Rhodes was recast for the second Iron Man movie.

Despite rumors that Downey had something to do with Terrence Howard being replaced by Don Cheadle, the actor maintains he had nothing to do with it.

Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner

On screen and in the comic books, Black Widow and Hawkeye have always been the best of friends. But the actors behind those characters in the MCU always had a bit of a wall between them.

Although there was no mention of why the two didn’t get along (maybe a difference in personality), something that Renner did certainly didn’t help anything.

While promoting The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Renner made an inappropriate joke about Black Widow. Chris Evans had been in on the joke also, and when people became offended, Evans and Renner apologized.

Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr.

Marisa Tomei isn’t an Avenger, but she did appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Captain America: Civil War. She and Downey shared the screen for a while, and while they appeared to have great chemistry the two have quite a past together. Back in the 1990s, the two actors dated and appeared opposite one another in several movies, including the critically acclaimed Chaplin

Not getting along may be a bit of a stretch, because the two are on okay terms for having been in an on-again, off-again type of relationship. They did manage to put their differences aside long enough to get their work done, but it was obvious that the two did have differences.

Most of the cast gets along ‘too well’

Director Joss Whedon had said back in 2011 that the actors chosen to play in The Avengers just got along too well. In fact, the director was a little disappointed because they were hoping to “use” some of the tension he thought there might be.

That friendliness only got better as the years went by, and many of the cast had been friendly before that. For example, Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke of Black Panther attended the Yale School of Drama together before either made it big – and Nyong’o even gave Duke his campus tour!

Then there’s Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans, who have been working together in films since 2004’s The Perfect Score

This companionship may have a lot to do with why the MCU movies have been so popular. It is a well-known fact that great chemistry off screen usually translates into great chemistry on screen – and that makes for a fantastic movie.
