Kelly Clarkson was barely more than a teenager when she won the first season of American Idol in 2002. More than a decade later the singer has continued her career adding songwriting, producing, and even acting to her impressive resume. When Kelly married Brandon Blackstock, she not only found love but was tossed into a very famous family.

As Kelly captured America’s hearts on the iconic first season of American Idol, she was still finding her footing in the entertainment world. A critical and important decision she made was asking country music superstar Reba McEntire to perform with her on the finale. Their performance then, sparked a life long partnership as they have appeared together on stage, in music videos, and have even toured together.

Reba was Kelly Clarkson’s idol

In March of this year, while Kelly was on tour in Nashville she brought Reba out on stage to sing with her, as the pair has done countless times. During a segment, she has dubbed “A Minute and a Glass of Wine,” she spends a moment talking directly to the crowd and sipping on some wine because “friends don’t let friends drink alone”.

Kelly explains, “I’ve been super, super excited about this particular “Minute and a Glass of Wine,” I mean literally, I’ve been waiting weeks to do this,” Clarkson speaks to the audience candidly in the video above. “I’m super excited about my guest…I asked this person because this person has been such an influence, not just musically but personally. It’s just a really rare thing to like– meet your hero and they live up to it. I think everybody knows what’s about to happen.”

The two took to the stage together after that to sing some of Reba’s most famous songs, their voices matching perfectly and their friendship apparent on stage.

Kelly marries into Reba’s family

Kelly’s now husband is Reba’s stepson. Their marriage turned Kelly from “just a friend”, into Reba’s daughter-in-law. When Kelly married Brandon Blackstock in 2013 it only solidified the bond between Reba and Kelly. So, despite Reba’s recent divorce from her longtime manager and husband of more than 20 years, Narvel Blackstock in 2015, Kelly and Reba are family. Reba regularly talks about spending the holidays with Kelly and her family and enjoys being a part of their lives.

Do Kelly and Reba get along?

Reba is “thrilled to death” that Kelly is her daughter in law. In fact, she recently spoke out about her relationship with Kelly assuring interviewers of their good relationship. “We’re family,” she said. “She married my oldest son, Brandon, but we’re also good friends, so that goes a long way — when you can have a good friend as a part of your family.”

Kelly agrees with Reba

In 2018, Kelly was able to pay tribute to her musical hero and friend at the Kennedy Center Honors. Before she performed, Clarkson took a moment to talk about her love for Reba.

“I’ve been a fan of Reba since I was a little girl.” Clarkson explained,  “Her voice has always felt nostalgic for me. Even as an adult, there’s something about her tone and her storytelling that just feels like home…Sometimes when we meet our heroes, it doesn’t always pan out how you hope. But meeting Reba—being friends with her, and eventually becoming family—has been one of the highlights of my life, truly,” she continued. “So thank you so much for listening to me vent as an artist. Thank you so much for comforting me on the phone through my tears, like a friend. And thank you for being a really rad grandma for my kids. I love you so much.”

Kelly’s sweet speech is all the confirmation we need to fully understand the depth of the singer’s affection for her mother-in-law. It appears the feeling is mutual.
