We know the royals have rules for just about everything from how they dress to how they sit to what foods they can’t eat. Yep, just about everything so there must be a rule or specific protocol about tattoos and where they can get them, right?

Here’s more on that, plus whether Prince William and Prince Harry have tattoos or if either of their wives have any.

Do the princes have tattoos?

To date, Prince William does not have any tattoos. However, the prince did want to get a back tattoo years ago until Kate Middleton talked him out of it. The future king reportedly wanted to get one similar to the guardian angel former soccer star David Beckham has.

A sailor deployed with the prince on the HMS Iron Duke in the Caribbean told The Sun that William definitely wanted to get the ink but Middleton, who was his girlfriend at the time, didn’t approve.

“Lots of the guys on board sport tattoos [and] it was obvious William was fascinated,” the sailor said. “He asked how painful it was and wanted to know what they thought of his idea for a tattoo across his shoulders. We didn’t think he was serious — but he said he was keen to get a large tattoo like the one Beckham has.”

In the end, William did not get it and told his mates “the only thing that stopped him was his girlfriend.”

As for the Duke of Cambridge’s younger brother, well even though Harry has always been considered wild and edgy he never got any ink on his body. Moreover, there haven’t been any stories from his military buddies either about him ever having a desire to do so.

Do the duchesses have tattoos?

In 2018, Middleton was spotted with a small marking on her right hand during an opening for a new artist’s residence in Sunderland, England. This led many to speculate if and when the Duchess of Cambridge got a tattoo. However, Middleton’s artwork was only temporary.

While speaking with a group from Young Asian Voices, the duchess was asked by one of the girls if she could draw a henna tattoo on her hand.

“I said ‘Would you like a design?’ and she was like ‘Yes, if you don’t mind,’” Shajida Begum, who drew the black flower design, explained. “She was saying that it was really pretty. I was just telling her how it works. I was telling her when she can wash it off — I said ‘when it becomes flaky.’”

Meghan Markle has also opted for just some semi-permanent ink over the real thing. During her trip to Morocco in 2019, a 17-year-old girl named Samira asked the Duchess of Sussex if she could give her a henna tattoo.

Samira said that “It is a traditional practice for pregnant women in Morocco. It is to bring luck for the baby.” Markle was heard calling the design “really lovely” as she showed it off to Harry.

Which royal has multiple tattoos?

Many have wondered if the dukes and duchesses did get tattoos would they be breaking any sort of protocol. The answer is no because the royals do not have any rules against members of the family getting ink on their bodies. In fact, some of them do have permanent tats.

William and Harry’s third cousin, Lady Amelia Windsor, for example, has multiple tattoos. The Daily Mail noted that she has one on her ribcage and one on each of her wrists as well as a tiger on her shoulder.

Other royal families in Europe don’t seem to have a rule against getting inked up either as Princess Sofia of Sweden, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and Princess Stéphanie of Monaco all have tattoos.
