The film finally came out in select theaters and on VOD, and it’s been getting mostly positive reviews, including one from Showbiz Cheat Sheet. Hopefully fans are staying through the end credits, just to listen to the music, but there’s even more after.

Bill & Ted Face the Music writer Ed Solomon and director Dean Parisot spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet by Zoom about the film. They discussed how they settled on one last joke for Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves).

This ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ scene yielded the end credits sequence

Bill & Ted Face the Music picks up decades after Wyld Stallyns won the Battle of the Bands at the end of Bogus Journey. They still haven’t written the song that unites the universe, but they keep experimenting with their music. When time and space are about to collapse, they have to write that song quickly.

Bill and Ted get the idea to travel into the future to when they have written the song. Unfortunately, each future version of Bill and Ted seem to be worse off than before, and still haven’t written the song. At least, until they meet their oldest selves who give them the clue they need.

Ed Solomon wants people to stay past the end credits of ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’

The scene that comes after the end credits came from Bill and Ted’s last trip to their own futures. Solomon was excited for people to see it.

“It’d be nice for people to know that there’s something at the end after the credits,” Solomon said.

However, at this point, Solomon could not recall whether he wrote the scene with his co-writer Chris Matheson, or if Winter and Reeves improvised it. However it came to be, there is definitely an end credits scene in Bill & Ted Face the Music.

“We added that on set at the last minute,” Solomon thought first, before adding, “I might be wrong about that. I can’t remember when we wrote that, whether it was on set, whether we came up with it on set, hey, wouldn’t that be fun, or whether we had written that in the script. I can’t remember.”

Director Dean Parisot confirms it was improvised

Parisot said Reeves and Winter improvised several additional takes after the scene from the body of the movie. Once they were in that final Bill & Ted getup, there was no stopping them.

“The old man scene was the last scene we shot, we kept improving,” Parisot said. “No one wanted to go home.”

One of those improv’s made it into the movie, albeit after the credits roll. However, Parisot had to choose between several options.

“There were probably three or four other improvs of that end credit scene,” Parisot said. “All just as funny but we like that one the best.”

Perhaps the alternate end credit scenes will be on the DVD release?

“You never know,” Parisot said.
