Kemper is a funny person, so it is not surprising that her husband has a knack for making people laugh as well. Kemper and comedy writer, Michael Koman, tied the knot in 2012 after a few years of dating.

Koman has written for several shows such as Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Colbert Report, and Saturday Night Live. Kemper and Koman actually met on Late Night with Conan O’Brien when Kemper was an intern there.

Koman proposed to Kemper in early 2012, and Kemper once shared that the story was as hilarious as what one would find on a sitcom. What happened was Koman took at least three tries to get his proposal right.

“I love my husband,” Kemper said on the Today Show. “Michael, I love you, [but] you did not propose well… Three times, the subject of marriage came up… The first time he was like, ‘I don’t have the ring, but one day maybe we’ll get married. It was weird… I was like, ‘Am I supposed to say yes to that?'”

The second time, Koman brought his grandmother’s ring, but it was not exactly a proposal either. Kemper shared: “He was like, ‘I’m not asking… I mean, we can get married at some point.’ It kept being put off.”

The third time that Koman tried to propose was when Kemper had to go somewhere. “He asked me as I was leaving for New York from Los Angeles,” Kemper said. “He asked me to marry him [and] I got on a plane and left for a week. Again, I love him, but that was not a proposal.”

Ultimately, Kemper’s marriage worked out, and it is proof that a bad proposal does not necessarily mean a bad marriage.

Ellie Kemper and Michael Koman have two children together

Kemper and Koman have two sons: James (b. 2016) and Matthew (b. 2019).

The couple is extremely private about their family life on social media, but Kemper has shared a thing or two about her older son in interviews. For example, he used to love ripping up paper. These days, James is more in love with the soundtrack for the movie A Star Is Born.

Kemper shared: “Bradley Cooper’s voice is very deep and gravelly throughout the movie, and there’s one dialogue bit on the soundtrack… where Lady Gaga says, ‘You know I don’t feel this way about everybody,’ and Bradley Cooper says, ‘Good!’ James thinks that is so funny. He bursts out laughing every time it happens and now he says it.”

Kemper has even used her son’s talent to have some fun at parties. “I’ll say, ‘James, you know I don’t feel this way about everybody,’ and he says, ‘Good!’ And I’m, like, a stage mom about it,” Kemper revealed.
