Some fans may have wanted Doja Cat to disappear, but she has no plans to leave the music scene. The “Say So” singer just won her first MTV VMA and continues to drop verses and entertain fans on social media.

However, 2020 hasn’t been without its share of online controversy for Doja Cat, and internet had a field day after hip-hop legend Nas alluded to her in one of his songs. Fans tried to spark a new beef between the two, but did it work?

What Nas said about Doja Cat

On Aug. 14, Nas released “Ultra Black,” the first single from his new album, King’s Disease. In it, there’s one line where the rapper name-drops Doja Cat. “We goin’ ultra black, unapologetically black, The opposite of Doja Cat, Michael Blackson black.”

The song immediately trended on Twitter as fans took it as a diss. Nas referenced allegations that the singer made racist, anti-Black remarks. Doja Cat caught heat several times this year, but in May, social media users pulled up some of her old videos and tweets.

The entire thing exploded online and after staying quiet for weeks, she got on Instagram Live to address it. When Doja Cat caught wind of Nas’ lyrics, she told fans she had plans to release a song called “N.A.S.” which she said stands for “__ ain’t sh*t.”

For his part, Nas said he didn’t mean anything by it. During an interview with Power 106, he talked about the attention-grabbing line. “I just really was saying a rhyme that rhymed with ‘Ultra Black.’ I didn’t even think of it. It’s all love.”

Doja Cat has her own feelings about the Nas line

If you’re a hip-hop fan, then you know that Nas is always cited as one of the genre’s most gifted. He’s been in the game since the ‘90s. Doja Cat is a fan too, which is something she explained during an appearance on Fat Joe’s Instagram Live show.

Fat Joe is one of Nas’ peers and friends, and he delicately asked Doja Cat about her thoughts on the “Ultra Black” name-drop. She smiled and said she didn’t know where it came from, adding that she loves Nas and is glad he’s still putting out music.

“I grew up on Nas, so to hear that, I’m like damn. But also, damn!” she laughed. “Like, I f*ucking love Nas. Thank God he noticed me. I love Nas so I don’t give a sh*t, he can say whatever he wants. I really don’t care. If I love you I love you, I don’t really give a damn.”

Doja Cat continued by saying that she made jokes about the situation but there’s no way she’d ever have beef with Nas. She made it clear that she respects and loves him.

Doja Cat also has new music on the way

The singer/rapper spent an hour talking to Fat Joe about her background, career, and upcoming projects. When asked which artists she’d love to collaborate with, Doja Cat said there are too many to name, but shared she’d love to work with Ariana Grande, Pharrell, Billie Eilish, Tyler, the Creator, and Nicki Minaj (again).
