Dolly Parton‘s personal style is practically synonymous with gravity-defying hair. The artist has always embraced looks with loud colors, shining outfits, and bright makeup. While it’s hard to picture Parton appearing any other way, she believes she has toned down her appearance in recent years. Parton shared the way that she achieved this more subdued look.

Dolly Parton prefers an over-the-top hairstyle

Parton likes to Dolly-ize every look she has. She’s felt this way since she was a child. Long before her glittery stage outfits, Parton was styling her hair in a way that stood out from the crowd.

“I was doing a lot of my hair myself,” she told Allure. “Backcombing, they called it then, came out. I was doing that back in high school. I was one of the few girls in high school that was having that big, old bouffant hair. My daddy used to raise bees and some of those hairstyles looked like a beehive, so maybe I was influenced by that.”

She brought the same sensibility into her music career. Even when others warned her that her over-the-top looks could ruin her chance at success, she stayed true to herself.

Dolly Parton thinks she has toned down her hair in recent years

These days, Parton tries to combine modern styles with the glamour that she’s embraced over the years.

“I think my style today is a combination of all those things back through the years,” she said. “With my hair, we go back to those old things and just pick out the best elements and incorporate that into what’s new and modern.”

Parton’s signature look isn’t going anywhere. She still likes bright colors and rhinestones. But she did say that she has toned things down in the past few years, particularly with her hair.

“I still have the hair,” she said. “It’s not as wild or crazy, but it’s still big. If I don’t like it, I’ll change it. It’s still me and it’s mine.”

Even as she embraces more natural-looking, true-to-gravity hairstyles, Parton keeps her look uniquely her own. She just wants to look the way that makes her most comfortable.

She encourages people to dress the way that they like, regardless of style

Parton’s glitzy looks do not subscribe to any sort of style or trend. They’re just what she likes to wear.

“I just like to shine. I like to be sparkly,” she told Glamour. “… Everybody should just be themselves. You should be your own individual self and wear whatever makes you feel good.”

She believes that everyone should live this way.

“I just think everybody should base how they live in this world with what they’re comfortable with,” she said. “I may make some people uncomfortable with the way I look because of their ideas about fashion and beauty. But if I’m comfortable in myself, not only in my own skin but in my own clothes, then something’s going to radiate from me that’s going to make other people feel comfortable with me.”
