Drew Barrymore had high praise for her kids’ stepmom

During the Sept. 27 episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, Barrymore spoke openly about her divorce and her ex-husband Will Kopelman‘s new wife, Alexandra Michler. Though Barrymore and Kopelman split in 2016, she is a big fan of Michler.

Barrymore shared her thoughts on how amazing the addition of Michler is to their family. “He got married to this incredible woman, Allie, and I just feel like I won the lottery with her — like, I really did,” the actor said.

She continued, “We’re going to Hamilton together. I’ve been texting them on their honeymoon with invitations to our daughter, Olive’s, birthday. Like, ‘Do you like this invitation? Is this good to go, to send out?”’

Barrymore is thrilled about Michler coming into her life and her children’s life. “I feel like I’m lucky that there’s this new beautiful soul that came into our lives and I don’t try to be her best friend,” she explained.

“She knows that I absolutely worship the ground she walks on and I’m her biggest cheerleader, but I give them space. We hang out, we do dinners, all the kids’ birthdays. We might take a trip together,” Barrymore shared. “We’re finding our way in a beautiful, slow, respectful manner. And I’m just so lucky because she came into Will’s life and got to know my daughters very well and very real, saw all the warts and all the hearts and everything in between and literally was like, ‘I choose you.'”

Barrymore called the situation “a miracle.”

“It’s a miracle and I know miracles exist because I was so devastated that our relationship didn’t work out because I wanted this [perfect family],” she explained.

Drew Barrymore admitted that she ‘had a true nervous breakdown’ after her divorce

Barrymore shared that her divorce was difficult for her because kids were involved. “I think I had like a true nervous breakdown,” she explained. “When kids are involved, the stakes are higher and different than anything I’ve ever known from myself. Nothing I’ve ever seen or done compared to that devastation and I stayed in that place for a few years.”

She added, “I was having a hard time coping and I was smiling and I was living a lie. And I was in the greatest pain of my life.”

Despite the pain, Barrymore explained that she believes she and her now-ex “did a kicka** job of putting our kids first and showing solidarity.”

The actor continued, “I’m super close with his family. We still do holidays. I still stay at their house. I was like, ‘The divorce is going to happen, but nothing’s going to change.’ And everyone just got on board and we did. And it’s a testament to every member of the family.”
