Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant recalled their movie chemistry

During a May episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Grant and the host talked about first impressions and their on-screen chemistry. For Barrymore, she said she initially thought they might not click because their energies were so different.

“I loved getting to know you on our movie Music and Lyrics and it’s just one of my very favorite movies and it makes me so happy,” Barrymore said. “It was a good movie, it was a happy movie.”

Grant admitted that he sometimes hates the films he’s been in but that’s not the case with Music and Lyrics. “It’s impossible to hate — we’re so good in it and so charming.”

Despite being polar opposites on the energy spectrum, Grant said they “had a bit of chemistry,” which translated on screen.

“We really did,” Barrymore confirmed. “And it was funny too because when Hugh and I met, you know, Hugh, you can be a bit of a curmudgeon from time to time. And I, of course, am like a Labrador in heat. I’m so excited with joy and so when we both met, we were like, ‘Oh, we’re kind of different people.'”

The two “got to know each other” and connected, with Barrymore recalling, “We just used to sit around and laugh.”

Fast forward a few years after making their cute rom-com movie when Barrymore saw Grant in a New York City bar and greeted him with quite the kiss.

“One of the moments that I had some of the most moxie — and I don’t think we’ve ever talked about this,” she recalled. “I walked into, I think it was The Waverly Inn.”

Barrymore continued, “This was years ago, and I’d had a few drinks, and I walked in and I ran into you, and instead of saying hello, I grabbed you by the collar and I fully started kissing you!”

Grant was somewhat stunned by the bold move at the time but didn’t oppose it, either. “Yes, I remember that,” he said with a smile.

Barrymore impersonated Grant’s facial expression after she kissed him. “The expression was, ‘You’ve never greeted me that way before!'” she recalled. “And then, you had a second thought and you were like, ‘You know, I’m not hating this!’ And then we flirted and we were like, ‘OK, yeah, bye! See you soon!’”

Grant said the moment was “really bizarre” as he was meeting with movie executives from Los Angeles. He recalled how everyone saw the passionate kiss but when he returned to the table, no one spoke about it.

“I was very drunk as well and I was with some very nice, but not drunk, studio executives from LA,” Grant noted.

“They were very surprised. Someone said, ‘Oh, there’s Drew Barrymore.’ I get up to say hi, and then we make out for 10 minutes and then I sit down again and we get on talking about the script,” the actor explained.
