Drew Barrymore May Never Remarry After Will Kopelman: ‘It’s Like Something Closed, and It Stayed Closed’

Drew Barrymore doesn't think she'll be headed down the aisle soon, if ever. After her 2016 divorce from Will Kopelman, the actor felt she'd broken a promise she made to her daughters to give them the stable family and home life she never had.

Drew Barrymore doesn’t see herself getting married ever again. The actor’s been married three times but after her 2016 divorce from Will Kopelman, the 45-year-old creator of Flower Beauty thinks marriage isn’t in her future.

The actor felt she’d failed her kids when she and their father divorced

Not having a stable family or home life as a child made Barrymore want that for her own children. When she and Kopelman called it quits after four years of marriage the Golden Globe Award winner felt like she’d let her daughters, Olive, 8, and Frankie, 6, down.

As she said during an October 2020 interview on Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist, that’s why the divorce devastated her.

“I think that’s why I took [the divorce] so hard,” Barrymore said. “I was, like, oh, the ultimate promise I wanted to make with you and for you was to have this amazing family. And I found them. And there’s something not working that isn’t livable. How tragic is that?”

She also confessed that it’s taken her five years “to be able to speak with strength, articulation, perspective, hindsight, and see everything we did right because when we were getting divorced, it felt like everything was just wrong.”

Drew Barrymore’s ‘scared to find love again’

Will the Charlie’s Angels star ever walk down the aisle again? She thinks it’s unlikely because of the emotional turmoil she experienced during her and Kopelman’s divorce.

“It’s like, I don’t think I’ve recovered from that,” Barrymore said, tearing up. “I don’t know how to open that up again. It’s like something closed, and it stayed closed.”

She continued, saying the possibility of love scares her.

“I think I’m equally as scared to find love again as I would be as if it never happened,” she said.

She’s still close with Will Kopelman and his family

In the wake of her divorce, Barrymore and Kopelman are still a family. The actor says she’s close to her ex-husband’s relatives. Despite the split, their daughters have a close-knit family.

“But, the good news is that his family and I sort of made the most important choice: to be so together and united and connected,” Barrymore said. “That’s, I guess, what they call family. I know from not growing up with any family whatsoever that that was the last thing I wanted to do for my daughters.”

After wondering if she’d be happy again or whether or not she’d be able to provide the life she wanted for her daughters, Barrymore’s got both a stable home life and a successful career.

“Like divorce, things fell into place finally,” she said. “It’s amazing that my kids and I are happy. Because there’s been a lot of times I really did question, like, ‘Will we be happy?’ and we are. So that chokes me up.”

For now, Barrymore’s focused on her career and her daughters. She’s hosting and executive producing The Drew Barrymore Show. Meanwhile, she’s also growing her beauty brand.
