Pop singer Dua Lipa is having a momentous year with the release of Future Nostalgia in March, multiple virtual performances, and a remix album that dropped in August.

This follows her Grammy wins in 2019 for Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording. Although she had to reschedule her 2020 tour, the British artist is still determined to connect with her fans and keep releasing new music.

But there have been moments when Lipa’s confidence took a hit, and she recently shared how cyberbullying played a role.

Dua Lipa’s dance routine turned into a meme

In 2018, Lipa was one of the acts on the Jingle Ball tour which stopped in cities across the U.S. Her performance at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center went viral for its choreography with many people mocking the singer’s dance moves.

While some cracked jokes about her skills, others expressed they had secondhand embarrassment for Lipa, especially those who saw the show in person. Some fans wanted to know who was in charge of the choreography and blamed that person, but Lipa was thrashed online and eventually turned into various dance memes.

Lipa said trolls caused her anxiety

Lipa is covering the December edition of U.K.’s Attitude magazine and spoke about the impact of that viral moment. She explained how it affected her mental health in a negative way.

“I experienced a sh*t ton at the end of my first record,” she told Attitude. “And it was definitely something that gave me anxiety and made me upset and made me feel like I wasn’t good enough and made me feel like, maybe I’m not meant to be here and on the stage.”

It really affected her confidence and ability to trust. Lipa was well aware of the memes circulating about her, and noted that afterward, she was self-conscious of people whipping out their cameras.

“For a short period of time, it messed with my mental health. You know, I’d go on stage and if somebody was filming me, in my head, I wasn’t, like, ‘Oh, they’re filming me because they want to keep it.’ I was like, ‘They’re going to film it so they can laugh at me or something’.”

She told the outlet she learned to grow from the experience, and now she knows what she’s good at and the work it takes to be good. When it comes to social media, Lipa would love to see people be less judgmental and practice understanding.

Lipa set for virtual concert in November

Still working in beast mode this year, the singer announced Studio 2054, a live virtual concert event that will stream across the globe on Nov. 27.

According to a press release, Lipa will treat viewers to a show set that includes roller disco sets, acrobatics, and “ecstatic raves, trashy rocker hangouts, and voguing ballrooms.”
