‘Hamilton’ earned several Tony Awards following its Broadway debut

This Broadway cast is not throwing away their shot. Hamilton opened on Broadway in 2015, giving a refreshed perspective on the Revolutionary War and the Founding Fathers.

It quickly became one of the most popular productions on Broadway, earning several Tony Awards in the process. Hamilton received a whopping 16 nominations in 13 categories, ultimately winning 11 total and falling just short of the Tony-winning record set by The Producers in 2001.

‘Hamilton’ is nominated for several Emmy Awards thanks to their partnership with Disney+

Years after it debuted on Broadway, a recording of this Tony Award-winning musical debuted on Disney’s streaming platform. It included members of the original Broadway cast and even earned several Emmy Award nominations.

That includes nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

In 2016, the Hamilton cast accepted the Grammy Award for the Best Musical Theater Album. However, even with their live production recently released on Disney+, this musical was not eligible for an Oscar nomination. That’s not to say other cast members haven’t taken home Oscars for other projects.

Can the original Broadway cast of ‘Hamilton’ earn an EGOT?

Some cast members of the original Broadway musical may earn their EGOT status, thanks to this Disney+ release. That includes Renée Elise Goldsberry, who portrayed Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton and earned a Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.

“It is so hard to imagine taking home an Emmy because I’m so shocked that I have an Emmy nomination,” the actor said during an interview with ET Online. “Honestly, I won a GRAMMY, [and] I didn’t even know that it happened. I remember standing on that stage that day, and I was just so excited for Lin-[Manuel Miranda], I had no idea that I had won a GRAMMY, too.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda is just an Oscars shy of an EGOT himself. The actor and playwright earned his first Emmy Award for co-writing special material for the 67th annual Tony Awards.

Of course, Hamilton and its original Broadway cast earned several other awards, including a special Kennedy Center Honors for the creative team – Miranda, Kail, Alex Lacamoire, and Andy Blankenbuehler. That actors even traveled to the White House to perform for former President Barack Obama.

The live recording of Broadway’s Hamilton, featuring the original cast, is available for streaming on Disney+.
