Emmys 2021 is on the horizion. The 73rd Awards ceremony is set to air on September 19. Though the category for Best Drama is quite crowded, The Crown has a chance at winning. The long-running Netflix series has been acclaimed since its debut.

Created by Peter Morgan, the lavish series chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II from the end of World War II into the present day. It explores war, tragedies, romances, and political rivalries. Season 4 of the series introduced Princess Diana into the world and followed her tumultuous marriage to Prince Charles. It also explored how she would reshape the royal family forever.

Still, one particular episode could clinch The Crown’s Emmy win for Best Drama.

Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ has numerous Emmy nominations

The series focuses on the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The Crown opens in 1947 on the queen’s wedding day with her late husband, Prince Philip. Throughout the seasons it has slowly begun to press forward into the modern-day.The Crown has been nominated for 24 Emmys this year. The categories include Outstanding Lead Actress for both Olivia Colman, as Queen Elizabeth II, and Emma Corrin, as Princess Diana.

It is also dominating in categories like Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series with nominations for Emerald Fennell, as Camilla Parker Bowles. Helena Bonham Carter is up for the same award for her work as Princess Margaret. Gillian Anderson is also in the running for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher. This year, The Crown is also up for Outstanding Drama series.

Though the Emmys have not yet aired this year, Claire Foy has taken home the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series for her cameo as Queen Elizabeth II. The series has also won, Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series and Outstanding Cinematography For A Single-Camera Series (One Hour).

To date, The Crown has earned 63 Emmy nominations and taken home 14 wins.

Episode 406 ‘Terra Nullius’ could help the series win Best Drama

Shows like Bridgerton, Lovecraft Country, The Boys, Handmaid’s Tale, Pose, This Is Us, The Maladorian, and The Crown are up for the win. However, The Crown could be the clear winner due to episode 406, “Terra Nullius.”

In the episode, Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) and Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), fly to Austrialia, shortly after the birth of Prince William. The voyage becomes a make or break moment for the couple’s marriage. It also begins to solidify the type of mother that Princss Diana would become. She would shun royal rules and put the happiness of her sons above all else.

Additionally, her connection with the people of Austrialia begins to solify her image as The People’s Princess, effectively shattering any hopes of a happy marriage with the future Crowned King.

When will ‘The Crown’ Season 5 premiere?

As much as we’re looking forward to the Emmys, fans are also very much looking forward to the penultimate season of The Crown. Fans of the stunning drama series will have to wait a big longer to be invited back to Buckingham Palace.

The series began filming its fifth season in June 2021, and there has been a major cast shakeup. Imelda Staunton, will step into Queen Elizabeth’s shoes. Jonathan Pryce of Game of Thrones’ fame will be Prince Philip. Taking over for Helena Bonham Carter, Lesley Manville will transform into Princess Margaret. Elizabeth Debicki will become Princess Diana. Finally The Wire’s Dominic West will portray the Prince of Wales.

The season is expected to drop sometime in 2022. It will likely debut around the holiday season. The Crown Season 5 is set to press into the ’90s. It will possibly also showcase Princess Diana’s death. Moreover, this season is expected to explore Prince Philip’s relationship with Penny Brabourne (Countess Mountbatten of Burma). Natascha Mcelhone will portray Penny.
