‘Euphoria’ fan theory says Elliot dies

Elliot has only appeared in a few episodes of the dark HBO drama, but his character has become a significant part of Rue’s story. In the season 2 premiere, Elliot saves Rue from an overdose, who relapsed after four months of sobriety at a New Year’s Eve party. Now, he’s getting closer with Rue and Jules (Hunter Schafer) for reasons unknown to fans.

YouTuber Turtle With an Appetite has an interesting theory about Elliot’s death in the series. “Not sure if it’s this season or another, but he’s totally gonna die,” says the Euphoria fan. They believe Elliot and Rue’s conversation about whether there’s a stronger emotion than love (to which Rue answered “loss”) foreshadows his death.

As they elaborate, Elliot’s death could be necessary to further Rue’s addiction storyline and overall character development. Plus, it would be a full-circle moment for Rue if Elliot were to overdose, especially after what he did for her in the season 2 premiere.

More hints about Elliot’s death in ‘Euphoria’

Fans who believe Elliot has to die to further the story think Euphoria may have already hinted at the character’s fate in other ways. “Elliot will die of an OD,” says one TikTok user. “Many are comparing the dancing scenes with Rue and her dad [to] Rue [dancing with] Elliot.”

Rue’s father died from cancer, as explained in the first season of Euphoria. His diagnosis and the medications that came with it are what kickstarted Rue’s addiction.

In season 2, fans thought Rue’s dance scene with Elliot mirrored those dancing with her father. Whether or not the parallels between these scenes are relevant remains to be seen.

Zendaya says Elliot is ‘crucial’ to the story in season 2

Zendaya admitted to Variety she wasn’t “feeling” working more Elliot into the Euphoria narrative. But she also noted, “it’s crucial that Elliot exist and that he be the person that is honestly the catalyst for a lot of things that just have to happen.” But that may not require him to die.

While some fans believe Elliot could die this season, others have varying theories about the Euphoria character. Some fans think Elliot exists solely to drive a wedge between Jules and Rue.

“If you watch both Rue and Jules promo trailers, you can hear Elliot telling Rue (maybe) that he doesn’t think that they (Rue and Jules) bring out the best in each other,” says a fan on Reddit. Elliot and Rue’s drug use is the main reason they’re friends. Knowing Jules doesn’t want Rue to use drugs could be enough to inspire Elliot to create distance between the couple.

Other fan theories are less sinister and point to the idea of Elliot wanting to be in a throuple with Rue and Jules. “I think Rue [and] Elliot [and] Jules will have every intention of a threesome,” says another Reddit user. “Ultimately, Rue will be so strung out … that Jules and Elliot will hook up on their own.”

Watch Euphoria on HBO on Sundays at 9 PM ET to find out how Elliot’s story unfolds.
