Despite being a hugely popular actress, Eva Mendes keeps a pretty low profile off-screen. She lives a quiet life with her longtime beau, Ryan Gosling, and their two children and generally avoids sharing information about them. While this can be a bummer for fans, Mendes maintains that she has a good reason for her private approach to her family.

Why Eva Mendes doesn’t post her family

According to Us Weekly, Mendes had been answering questions on Instagram on April 18 when a fan questioned why she doesn’t post her family on the platform.

“As far as Ryan and I, it just works for us this way to stay private,” said the Hitch actress.

“I have always had a clear boundary when it comes to my man and my kids. I’ll talk about them, of course, with limits, but I won’t post pictures of our daily life,” Mendes continued.

She went on to explain that since her children — daughters Esmeralda, 5, and Amada, 3 — are so young, she doesn’t feel totally comfortable about posting them online where millions of people can see.

“And since my children are so little and don’t understand what posting their image really means, I don’t have their consent. And I won’t post their image until they’re old enough to give consent,” Mendes continued.

How long have Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling been together?

These two have been together for about nine years. They went public with their romance in 2011 after they co-starred in the crime drama The Place Beyond The Pines (2012).

The pair welcomed Esmeralda in 2014 and Amada about two years later. In 2016, Us Weekly reported the couple had secretly tied the knot, but a representative denied the claims.

In a rare 2019 interview with Women’s Health, Mendes talked about their relationship and how she had never wanted kids until Gosling came along.

“It was the furthest thing from my mind,” she explained. But then “Ryan Gosling happened. I mean, falling in love with him. Then it made sense for me to have…not kids, but his kids. It was very specific to him.”

Eva Mendes chose their family over Hollywood

Once she gave birth to their first child, Mendes’ priorities changed. As she told Women’s Health: “I felt a lack of ambition, if I can be honest. I feel more ambitious in the home right now than I do in the workplace.”

Even though she said she plans on returning to acting one day—her last film role was 2014’s Lost River—Mendes tries not to expose her children to the Hollywood lifestyle so they can have as normal an upbringing as possible.

“What I try to emphasize is that I don’t let them see me put attention to how I dress,” Mendes continued. “They’ve never seen me get ready for something; they’ve never seen me at work. Which is fine, for whoever wants to do it that way, but the way I keep it normal is by not letting them see me in these situations. I’m just Mom. And I’m more than happy to just be Mom.”
