Beyoncé posted a birthday tribute to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, on her 40th birthday Wednesday. But it isn’t the first time she stanned for Meghan. We’re taking a look at all the times the recording artist publicly paid homage to Prince Harry’s wife

Beyoncé also bestowed the honor on former President Barack Obama

Beyoncé posted the HBD message directly to the front page of her personal website — a rare honor she’s bestowed for at least two others. Once for former President Barack Obama, and once for actor Michael Ealy. A throwback photo accompanies each birthday wish.

In the post, a young Meghan is seen in a school picture wearing a flower headband and a collared blue dress with brightly colored buttons. The minimalist message reads, “Happy Birthday Meghan Markle.”

While the message was simple, the sentiment was not. The world-famous recording juggernaut clearly has a deep respect for Meghan.  In their 2019 recorded acceptance speech for the Brit Awards, Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z posed in front of a portrait of Meghan while accepting their trophy for Best International Group. According to People, the video was a nod to the  APES— music video, in which the couple stands in front of the Mona Lisa.

In the awards ceremony version, they replaced Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting with a bejeweled portrait of Meghan.  “In honor of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas,” wrote Beyoncé in a follow-up Instagram post. “Congrats on your pregnancy! We wish you so much joy.”

The two met on the red carpet for the 2019 ‘Lion King’ remake

Meghan and Beyoncé ran into one another on the red carpet for the live-action remake of The Lion King in July 2019. Beyoncé, who voiced Nala, hugged Meghan and called her “my princess,” touching off a widely-publicized moment between the two. Prince Harry and Jay-Z also exchanged niceties, with the two couples discussing children. Prince Harry reportedly asked how “the twins” were doing, and Jay-Z offered perspective for the then-expecting parents.

“The best advice I can give you, always find some time for yourself,” said Jay-Z, who is a father of three with Beyoncé (Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir).

Of the royal couple, Beyoncé was reported to have said they were “so sweet.”

Also on her personal website, Beyoncé thanked Meghan for her “courage” in the wake of the highly publicized sit-down Oprah Winfrey interview — an event watched by over 17 million people.  “Thank you Meghan for your courage and leadership,” Beyoncé wrote, accompanied by an image of Meghan and Beyoncé meeting at The Lion King’s London premiere. “We are all strengthened and inspired by you.”

While it’s indisputable that Beyoncé is a fan of Meghan, Insider reports that the feeling is mutual. According to the publication, Idris Elba claimed that The Duchess of Sussex played Beyoncé songs at her royal wedding reception. Elba reportedly told BBC Radio 1Xtra in 2019 that Beyoncé was “always” on Meghan’s playlist.

“There’s always Beyoncé on the playlist, he said. “You already know that! You already know that!”
