After their enormous success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Russo Brothers teamed up with Chris Hemsworth for the Netflix film Extraction. That film quickly became the most popular original movie in the streaming service’s history. Now, the Russo brothers want Hemsworth to reunite with one of his Avengers: Endgame co-stars for Extraction 2.

The Russo Brothers are history-making filmmakers

Joe and Anthony Russo’s company AGBO produced Extraction, with Joe writing the script. Before that film became Netflix’s most-watched feature ever, the brothers made history at the box office.

As We Got This Covered notes, the siblings are known globally for their work in the MCU. They have directed more films in the franchise than anyone else. And, they are the only filmmakers in movie history to direct three films that earned more than one billion dollars at the box office.

Their hits include both of the MCU’s biggest commercial successes – Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. They even did the impossible and knocked James Cameron’s Avatar out of the top spot on the list of highest-grossing films of all time.

Now, the Russo brothers are working on Extraction 2. Joe said he has closed the deal to write the script. Currently, they are in the “formative stages of what the story can be.”

Will Chris Hemsworth reunite with Chris Evans for ‘Extraction 2?’

Joe and Anthony Russo have claimed they are done with the MCU. But, that doesn’t mean they won’t use their Marvel connections for future projects. The siblings have already worked with the late Chadwick Boseman in 21 Bridges. They also teamed up with Tom Holland in the upcoming crime thriller Cherry.

Now that the Extraction sequel has received the green light, the Russo brothers have their eye on former Captain America Chris Evans to join Hemsworth in the follow-up. Joe and Anthony have already collaborated with Evans for the Netflix blockbuster The Gray Man.

Even though Evans has avoided action movies in an attempt to redefine his career post-MCU, it doesn’t look like Extraction 2 would be something he could turn down. While the Russo brothers look to Evans for the sequel, insiders say they also want to bring in more MCU veterans to the project.

‘Extraction’ was an unexpected Netflix hit

According to We Got This Covered, when Extraction premiered on Netflix back in April 2020, the expectations were low. Many thought that it would be another mid-budget action flick that would be easily forgotten.

The low expectations were due to the film’s less-than-original premise. Plus, Hemsworth doesn’t have the best history when it comes to the roles he has played outside of the MCU’s Thor.

The film shattered expectations and ended up being a huge success thanks to director Sam Hargrave’s ingenuity and Hemsworth’s performance as Tyler Rake. With the original receiving more than 100 million streams in its first month on Netflix, the Russo brothers are ready to bring even more MCU star power for the sequel.

In addition to bringing in Chris Evans to join Chris Hemsworth, the Russo brothers are reportedly considering other Marvel stars for the project. Production for Extraction 2 is not set to begin until 2021.
