How the debate originated

On Twitter, Marvel fans debated about which movie was worse: Iron Man 3 or Thor: The Dark World. On Rotten Tomatoes, Thor: The Dark World has a critic score of 66 percent and an audience score of 76 percent.

The consensus for Thor: The Dark World on Rotten Tomatoes reads:

“It may not be the finest film to come from the Marvel Universe, but Thor: The Dark World still offers plenty of the humor and high-stakes action that fans have come to expect.”

Iron Man 3 has a critic score of 79 percent and an audience score of 78 percent.

The critical consensus reads:

“With the help of its charismatic lead, some impressive action sequences, and even a few surprises, Iron Man 3 is a witty, entertaining adventure and a strong addition to the Marvel canon.”

As fans debated about the two movies, the debate then changed. Soon enough Marvel fans were debating about the quality of Iron Man 3, with a large number of fans considering it one of the best films in the MCU.

The pro-‘Iron Man 3’ argument

Of the fans tweeting about the movie, it seems a majority think that Iron Man 3 is underrated. Fans of the movie cited how it portrays Tony Stark’s struggle with PTSD and anxiety, resulting in a strong character-driven story line.

“Imagine thinking that iron man 3 is a bad movie. Couldn’t be ME,” wrote a Twitter user.

“Crazy how Iron Man 3 has aged better than almost every single MCU film,” a fan tweeted.

“everyone talking about iron man 3 means i get to remind y’all of this scene portraying tony’s mental health struggles and that even superheroes struggle sometimes with being okay,” one fan tweeted.

“reasons why iron man 3 is a god tier movie : – an accurate representation of anxiety and ptsd – shows how westerners are the real face of terrorism and middle east wars (iron man 1 did that as well) – IT HAS IM BLUE DABEDIDABEDA AS AN INTRO – it’s just an amazing movie shut up,” a Twitter user wrote.

The anti-‘Iron Man 3’ argument

For Marvel fans who do not like the movie, a main part of their criticism falls on the villain and use of the Mandarin, as well as the movie’s deviation from comic book material. Some fans also faulted director Shane Black’s characterization.

“Iron Man 3 is why we didn’t get an Iron Man 4. Folks realized Tony’s arc was better when he got to mess things up for everybody else, and not when he had to go all Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Marvel had to retcon that there was an ACTUAL Mandarin out there b/c Shane Black butchered it,” tweeted a fan.

“I lovingly call this movie Robert Downey Jr. Man 3, since it’s more of a ‘let RDJ be the most RDJ he can be without interrupting him’ film than an actual superhero movie. It’s an excellent movie, but it does sort of piss on the Iron Man canon with Black’s take on the Mandarin,” wrote a Twitter user.
