Disney+ singer Olivia Rodrigo is the newest teen pop phenomenon, and many have been comparing her to other teen “It Girls” of the past. One of the biggest fan comparisons for Rodrigo is between her and “Melodrama” singer Lorde. At face value, they have a lot in common — they’re singers who write their own songs and come from a place of raw vulnerability. Plus, they both were teens when they had their first big singles — “drivers license” for Rodrigo, and “Royals” for Lorde. Here are what fans are saying about the Rodrigo and Lorde comparison.

Olivia Rodrigo came out with her first album ‘Sour’ on May 21

Rodrigo blasted onto the music scene with “drivers license” in January 2021, similar to Lorde’s massive success with “Royals” in 2013. The Disney+ star followed up her first song with “deja vu” on April 1, a few months later. Her last single before her Sour album was “good 4 u,” a pop rock-inspired anthem about a bitter ex lover.

The full album came out on May 21 to rave reviews from fans and critics alike.

Fans have been comparing Olivia Rodrigo to another musician Lorde

But back when Rodrigo’s “drivers license” first came out, the star brought in many comparisons to Lorde. Many noted that the bridge in the song felt inspired by the other singer.

“Does anyone else think the Olivia Rodrigo song ‘drivers license’ gives them Lorde vibes,” one person asked on Reddit. “I think especially when it goes into, ‘red lights, stop [signs]'” the person continued.

A different fan replied: “The bridge definitely has Lorde vibes.”

Another weighed in: “I heard 10 seconds of this song on Instagram and thought Lorde […] released a new song that somehow flew under the radar.”

Someone else commented: “100% Agree! She has such a similar voice to Lorde, I was getting Lorde vibes through the whole song.”

The Lorde comparisons are likely deeply complimentary for Rodrigo, who has been vocal about her appreciation for the other singer. She has consistently listed Lorde among her top songwriting inspirations when it comes to making her own music.

Lorde has kept a low profile since releasing her 2017 album Melodrama. The body of work, which Jack Antonoff produced, was celebrated by many around the world for its relatability and emotional honesty. While fans have been eagerly awaiting new music from Lorde, she has stayed out of the public eye and kept a tight wrap on any new projects.

However, a tweet from Primavera Sound on May 25 revealed that Lorde might be sharing a new song on June 10 at the festival. The graphic showed Lorde performing in addition to Massive Attack and The Strokes — and since Melodrama is 4 years old, it would make sense that Lorde might debut some new music.

We’ll have to keep an eye out for any news regarding Lorde’s music. But for now, we’ll go ahead and stream Sour.
