Jada Pinkett Smith and Tupac Shakur were best friends

Shakur and Smith met while attending the prestigious Baltimore School for the Arts in Maryland. “It was the first day, and he came he came over to me and introduced himself,” she said in a previous interview. “And in high school, Pac was a little funny looking. Definitely from looking at him, wasn’t necessarily the type of cat that I would even like, deal with.”

The two formed a special and complex friendship that would travel with them as both of their careers rose in Hollywood. Shakur appeared on an episode of A Different World, alongside Smith in her first recurring acting role.

Shakur once likened his friendship with Smith to the legendary relationship of Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. “Jada’s my heart. She will be my friend my whole life. We’ll be old together,” he said in an interview that was featured in the documentary Tupac Resurrection. “Jada can ask me to do anything and she can have it. She can have my heart, my liver, my lungs, my kidney, my blood marrow, all of that.”

For Shakur, Smith was one of the only people in his life who could center him in his fits of perceived aggression as his rap alter ego began to take over. But their friendship was not without conflict. They butted heads often. So much so that in the final year of Shakur’s life, the two were a bit estranged, with him feeling Smith had changed.

“He felt as though I had changed,” she revealed, as reported by Pop Sugar. “I’d gone Hollywood. I’d gone soft. And looking back now, I totally understand where Pac was at the time. It was a mentality he started to come out of before he was murdered.”

Fans believe Jada Pinkett Smith and Tupac Shakur were romantically involved

Despite their close bond, Smith has always insisted that her relationship with Shakur was strictly platonic. That doesn’t mean she never questioned if they could transition into a romantic relationship.

She told Howard Stern in 2015 that a kiss between the two was confirmation that they were meant to be friends.

You know, it’s so funny because now being older, I have more of an understanding of what that was between us. When you have two young people that have very strong feelings, but there was no physical chemistry between us at all, and it wasn’t even just for me — it was him too. There was a time when I was like, ‘Just kiss me! Let’s just see how this goes,’ and when I tell you it had to be the most disgusting kiss for us both.

Still, for Shakur, Smith was the apple of his eye. He even wrote a poem in her honor, calling her the “omega” of his heart. The poem was later featured in a book of poetry by the rapper titled, The Rose That Grew From Concrete.”

But in light of Smith’s confirmation that her once close friendship with Alsina became a romantic “entanglement,” fans are calling bluff on Smith and Shakur’s platonic friendship and have been making their feelings known on social media.

“I feel bad for Will Smith and his Kids. @jadapsmith everyone is a human but 25 years of marriage!? Come on. The rumor of you and 2pac is now becoming more alive,” one Twitter user wrote.

“I do think 2Pac was always Jada Pinkett-Smith’s soulmate. They had a special bond,” one wrote. “Not saying Jada settled with Will but I think for some** people, they don’t always end up with the person that they’ve had the deepest & most meaningful connection with in their lives.”

“I BELIEVE THAT @2PAC AND @jadapsmith WERE IN AN ENTANGLEMENT,” wrote another.

Smith is ignoring the noise. She’s always maintained that her friendship with Shakur was one of the most meaningful in her life and that he was one of the first male figures to show her true love. Smith considered Shakur to be like an older brother to her.
