It looks like the X-Men are coming home. In 2019, Disney and 21st Century Fox merged, setting the stage for a huge homecoming in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because Marvel Studios is under the Disney umbrella, that means  X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool can rejoin the MCU. Recent rumors suggest that at least one of them might be coming back soon in the next Doctor Strange movie.

Inverse reports that an unnamed source has shared information about this superhero reunion. The leak suggests some of the official X-Men characters may make an appearance in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is slated for release early next year, and the buzz indicates that at least one of the important Mutant characters will be a part of it.

In fact, the movie may introduce a group known as the Illuminati. In the X-Men comics, this group is a team of Mutants who work together undercover to fight evil. This elite squad includes Professor X, Captain Peggy Carter, Balder the Brave, Monica Rambeau, and Mordo.

What will the new Doctor Strange movie be about?

Marvel Studios is well-known for keeping upcoming movies under wraps, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is no exception. Although we don’t know for certain if the rumors about the new movie are correct, if you want to avoid potential spoilers, now would be a good time to click away.

According to We Got This Covered, a report about the new movie has spilled some of the tea about the plot. The story is rumored to explore Doctor Strange’s struggle to balance his obligations as Master of the Mystic Arts with his sworn responsibilities as a doctor. While one role requires him to kill someone who threatens the safety of all reality, the oath he took as a surgeon forbids him from doing any harm.

The movie reportedly takes place two years after the events in the limited series WandaVision, and some people suspect that the Scarlet Witch herself is the person who will put Doctor Strange to the test.

A New ‘X-Men’ Series Could Be Better Than a Movie, According to MCU Fans

Naturally, fans are dying to know exactly who will show up in the new MCU movie. Deadpool has already made a brief showing in the universe, so does that mean it will be him? According to Movie Web, the most impactful option would be Professor X, because where he goes the rest of the X-Men will follow.

When we speak of “official” X-Men characters, it’s important to note that there have been characters from that franchise who came into the MCU before. After all, both Wanda and Pietro Maximoff were X-Men villains. But because Marvel Studios didn’t yet own the rights to their characters, they had to finesse the details.

To introduce Pietro and Wanda to the MCU without running into legal issues, they altered their backstories, eliminating any mention of the X-Men or any of the Mutants. But now that those legal restrictions have been eliminated, the other characters should appear in their official, unaltered forms.

These official characters may even be able to interact with the Scarlet Witch in ways that would bring her back into their storyline. Professor X, for example, would naturally reach out to her, as someone who nurtures and guides Mutants.

It remains to be seen how the X-Men or any of the returning characters will show up in the MCU. Whether or not Marvel Studios is ready, fans certainly are.
