How ‘Full House’ Incorporated the Actors’ Hobbies Into the Sitcom

Each member of the Tanner family had a hobby to share with fans. For Stephanie Tanner that was singing and dancing. Her father, Danny Tanner, loved to clean.

When it comes to the actors behind these characters, Full House did its best to incorporate real-life interests into the actors’ respective characters.

‘Full House’ told the story of the Tanner family living in San Francisco

There was always something going on with the Tanner family, whether someone was jumping out of an airplane or someone else starring alongside a woodchuck for a children’s television show.

Full House ran for several years, introducing viewers to characters like Michelle Tanner, Aunt Becky, and Uncle Jesse, each of them with their own hobbies.

The ‘Full House’ actors shared some hobbies in common with their characters

As a real-life comedian and impressionist, Dave Coulier shared a few similarities with his Full House character, Joey Gladstone. Those hobbies were not a coincidence, the actor explained, as the show often incorporated aspects of the actors’ lives into the sitcom.

“I got to bring a lot of elements from my real life into the show,” Coulier said during an interview with TODAY. “I’m an airplane pilot, so we did an episode where I got to fly Jesse and drop him off in a tomato patch. We did an episode where I got to play ice hockey. And we also got to incorporate some of my stand-up in the show.”

Of course, Coulier wasn’t the only actor with other passions. This series starred real-life musician John Stamos who, aside from his Full House stardom, performed alongside the Beach Boys and other musical acts.

This passion for music was mirrored in Stamos’ character, Uncle Jesse, who often performed with his band, Jesse and the Rippers, his marketing job, and around the house with the Tanner family.

Candace Cameron Bure’s character, DJ was a writer and the editor of her high school’s newspaper. Later in life, this actor also became an author, publishing books like Dancing Through Life: Steps of Courage and Conviction, Staying Stylish: Cultivating a Confident Look, Style, and Attitude, and Balancing It All: My Story of Juggling Priorities and Purpose.

These actors returned for the Netflix spinoff series, ‘Fuller House’

Viewers returned to the Tanner house for the Netflix spinoff, Fuller House. In this series, DJ Tanner functioned as the matriarch of the home, now with her children and dog.

There were still appearances from characters like Danny Tanner, Uncle Jesse, and Joey. However, this show since debuted its last episode on the subscription service.

Most episodes of Full House are available on Hulu, while Fuller House is available on Netflix.
