‘Full House’ Star Dave Coulier on the Sitcom’s ‘Bizarre’ Celebrity Guest Appearance
Full House had multiple celebrity guests during its original eight-season run. The Beach Boys performed with Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) on drums. And Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) of Family Matters helped Stephanie Tanner (Jodie Sweetin) embrace wearing glasses. But one celebrity guest appearance, in particular, stood out to Full House actor Dave Coulier as “bizarre.”
Dave Coulier played Joey Gladstone on ‘Full House’
Audiences first met the Tanner family on Sept. 22, 1987. A widower, Danny Tanner (Bob Saget) got two new roommates following the death of his wife. His brother-in-law, Jesse (Stamos), moved in along with his comedian friend, Joey (Coulier). They helped Danny raise his three young daughters, D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure), Stephanie, and Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen).
Joey provided comedic relief with his goofy impressions, hand motions, and voices. And, of course, his memorable “cut it out” catchphrase. When he wasn’t making the Tanner family (and the audience) laugh, Joey offered up some life lessons.
Coulier played Joey in all eight seasons of Full House. He also reprised the role in the Netflix reboot, Fuller House, from 2016 to 2020.
Dave Coulier once called Little Richard’s appearance ‘bizarre’
To mark the 25th anniversary of Full House in 2012, Coulier looked back on the series with HuffPost TV. Asked if he had a favorite guest star, the now-61-year-old actor recalled Little Richard’s time on the show.
“We had many, but Little Richard was on the show and he was just so bizarrely weird and funny and sweet and kind and out of his mind,” Coulier said. “It was just so fun to be around this musical icon who was so flamboyantly overt with every comment,” he added calling it “just bizarre.”
The “Long Tall Sally” singer appeared in Full House Season 7 Episode 23: “Too Little Richard Too Late.” Originally airing on May 10, 1994, he performed at a concert to save Michelle’s art program.
Little Richard ‘accidentally slapped’ Jodie Sweetin
Another Full House cast member walked away from Little Richard’s guest appearance with a unique memory. In the same interview, Sweetin recalled a moment when the rock ’n’ roll legend “accidentally slapped” her.
“I was standing next to him and we were doing this scene where he was playing the piano and he did a big finish with his hands and it was just like, ‘Boom,’” Sweetin told HuffPost TV, saying that he “felt so bad.”
“But I’m on a fairly short list of people who can say they’ve been slapped by Little Richard,” she added with a laugh.
