‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’: Kelly Bishop Isn’t Convinced She’ll Play Emily Gilmore Ever Again

Kelly Bishop spent seven years playing Lorelai Gilmore's rigid mother, Emily Gilmore. She reprised her role in 2016 for 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.' While fans would love to see what became of Emily, Bishop doesn't foresee a second revival season happening, despite the optimism of some of her castmates.

Whether Netflix will make Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2 is a topic of hot debate. The limited series, based on the WB original Gilmore Girls, aired in 2016. The four-part event left fans with a cliffhanger, and they’ve been clamoring for more ever since. While some of the cast is pretty optimistic about the chances of more Gilmore Girls, at least one of the show’s original stars isn’t so sure it’s going to happen.

Scott Patterson, who portrayed Luke Danes in Gilmore Girls, seems confident that more episodes will eventually find their way to fans. Lauren Graham, who played Lorelai Gilmore, seems optimistic, too. The stars’ statements have buoyed the spirits of fans who have been waiting years to find out who fathered Rory Gilmore’s baby. Unfortunately, Kelly Bishop isn’t so sure about more episodes.

Bishop, who spent seven years playing Emily Gilmore, sat down with Town & Country to discuss her newest Netflix work, Halston. The topic eventually turned to Gilmore Girls. When asked whether she thought there would be more episodes of the series, Bishop said she honestly didn’t think more would be made.

Why does Kelly Bishop think ‘Gilmore Girls’ is officially over?

Bishop’s words might sting some of the show’s most devoted fans. But her thoughts on a second revival have nothing to do with the quality of the show. Most of the castmates agree there is a lot more story left to tell. Bishop insists that a second revival isn’t in the cards because of scheduling.

According to Bishop, show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and several of the main cast members are super busy these days. Sherman-Palladino is currently working with Amazon to craft original content. Graham is active on Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. And Alexis Bledel, who portrayed Rory Gilmore for all seven seasons, has worked on The Handmaid’s Tale and will reprise her role as Lena in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3.

Still, Kelly Bishop is interested in reprising her role if ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2’ happens

While Bishop isn’t entirely sure that a second revival season is in the cards, she isn’t counting out the possibility. She told Town & Country that she would happily play Emily Gilmore again if the opportunity presented itself. She feels a special kinship to the character and remains close to Sherman-Palladino.

Bishop is so close to the show’s creator that she was one of the people Bishop contacted when she recently adopted a new pet. Shortly before the pandemic shut down much of Hollywood, the 77-year-old star lost her dog. By the time she was ready to adopt again, many shelters had been cleared of dogs in need of homes.

She finally found her new companion and connected with Sherman-Palladino to let her know her new pet is named “Baby.” Bishop joked that the name isn’t original — but fitting considering one of her major roles before Gilmore Girls was in Dirty Dancing.
