Fans are anxiously awaiting word of a second Gilmore Girls revival. While an official confirmation has yet to come, many believe a now-active Instagram account may mean Netflix will offer fans a second season of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. The first revival ended with Rory Gilmore telling her mother that she was pregnant, and many fans assume Logan Huntzberger is the father of that child. Rory’s love life, however, was a bit complicated at the time. So, is it possible that her ever-forgettable boyfriend, Paul, actually fathered Rory’s child?

Fans assume Logan is the father of Rory’s baby

A central story arc throughout the revival is Rory’s relationship with Logan. The pair, who appear to be star-crossed lovers, can’t manage to stay away from each other, even though they are in relationships with other people. Logan is engaged, seemingly reluctantly, to an heiress by the name of Odette, while Rory is in a weird relationship with a man named Paul. Logan is on track to fulfill his family’s dynastic plan, while Rory is rootless. Both seem emotionally pained by their paths, but neither seems particularly inclined to fix it.

Rory and Logan’s final meeting appears to make it clear that Logan is the father of Rory’s child. After all, she wakes up in his bedroom in a New Hampshire bed and breakfast after a wild night with the Life and Death Brigade. Fans can safely assume the duo slept together that night, as a final goodbye. Rory’s visit to her father, Christopher Hayden, also hints at the paternity of her child. She asks Christopher why he allowed Lorelai to raise her alone. If Logan is supposed to be Rory’s Christopher, the pregnancy would bring the story full-circle, which is precisely what Amy Sherman-Palladino planned.

But wait, couldn’t it still be Paul’s child?

Rory and Paul didn’t exactly have a steamy relationship. Rory could barely remember the poor guy, but he was still in the picture during the “Fall” episode. Fans do find out that Paul and Rory had been dating for two years in the “Winter” episode. While their paths don’t seem to cross particularly often, they do cross occasionally enough to maintain the relationship, at least on some level.

Let’s assume Rory and Paul were still getting together sometimes and sleeping together when they did manage to find themselves in the same space. If Paul waited until the fall to finally call it quits with Rory, we could assume that they hooked up at least once during the season. In theory, he may be the father of Rory’s baby.

Jack Carpenter doesn’t think it is likely, though

Jack Carpenter, the actor who portrayed Paul in the revival, sat down with The Hollywood Reporter shortly after the revival aired to discuss the series. When questioned about the likelihood of Paul being the father of Rory’s baby, he was incredulous.

Carpenter noted that he doubted Paul would play such a large role in a second revival. His character was intended to be forgettable, and if Rory’s life is supposed to mimic her mother’s, the father of her child would complicate her life. Paul wasn’t a complicating factor for Rory. The entire revival showed that Paul wasn’t a factor in Rory’s life at all.
