Gilmore Girls may have started out as the story of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, but Stars Hollow and all of its inhabitants quickly became important to the series, too. Fans of the show were genuinely invested in the lives of many of the townspeople, and no one character had more fans rooting for them than Lane Kim.

Rory’s best friend was a trailblazer destined to break out and do something amazing. However, any grand plans were put on hold indefinitely when she married young and immediately had children. Fans truly detest how Lane’s storyline played out and can’t help but to think things could have been different if her other love interest hadn’t left for another show.

Many fans hate that Lane ended up married to Zach

By all accounts, Lane’s husband, Zach, was a strange character. Sure, he might have made a great bandmate. But he was seemingly a bit dim and without any real redeeming qualities — not exactly what Gilmore Girls fans had in mind for quick-witted Lane.

After all, Lane was supposed to be destined for big things. She went through the trouble of breaking away from her strict upbringing, so she could play music. Her band was great, her desire to turn it into a popular act was impressive, and then her story just fizzled. To many fans, it seemed wrong to leave Lane married with children before the age of 25.

Screen Rant notes that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life did very little to further Lane’s story. In the end, Zach wasn’t what anyone wanted for Lane. Her attraction seemed pretty inexplicable in the first place, and her decision to marry him was entirely out of character. Ten years later, the fact that they were still together living in Stars Hollow—and Lane hadn’t achieved her dreams in the music industry—left many fans feeling pretty disappointed.

Was Lane Kim supposed to end up with Adam Brody’s character?

Lane’s first real boyfriend was Dave Rygalski. Dave was close to the perfect boyfriend. He helped Lane secure a gig in his band, and he worked tirelessly to win the approval of Lane’s mom, Mrs. Kim.

However, once he managed to do that, he disappeared from Stars Hollow. Dave’s absence was explained with a simple storyline about being in college in California. Lane and Dave’s eventual breakup was never mentioned.

Eventually, Lane moved on to Zach, whom she ended up marrying. But many fans believe Lane was really meant to end up with Dave, and there is a good reason for that theory.

Dave Rygalski is actually a real person. The real Dave is married to Helen Pai, who happens to be the woman Lane’s character is based on. She worked on Gilmore Girls and is best friends with Amy Sherman-Palladino.

So why exactly did Dave disappear? Adam Brody, the actor who played Dave, was offered a starring role on another show and took it. Brody’s first significant acting job was his recurring role on Gilmore Girls, but it wouldn’t be his last. In 2003, he was cast in The O.C. and appeared on the show until the series ended in 2007. Brody couldn’t possibly work on both shows, and The O.C. was a far more expansive role.

Would Lane return to a second ‘Gilmore Girls’ revival?

A second season of the Gilmore Girls revival might be in the works, though no one has confirmed it. If a second revival season does show up on Netflix, fans are hoping Sherman-Palladino will do better for Lane this time around. Would Lane actually return though?

Liza Weil, Danny Strong, Sean Gunn, Kelly Bishop, Yanic Truesdale, Scott Patterson, Tanc Sade, Alexis Bledel, Lauren Graham, Matt Czuchry and Keiko Agena arrive at the premiere of Netflix's "Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life" at the Regency Bruin Theatre on Nov. 18, 2016.

If Keiko Agena has anything to say about it, Lane would be in any more Gilmore Girls episodes. Agena, the actress who portrayed Lane for seven seasons, is excited about the prospect of returning.

Back in 2018, Entertainment Tonight spoke with Agena about the series, and she was all for a second season. “I do think that there is story left,” she said. “I mean, especially with Rory’s storyline.”

How Lane would play into that storyline is anyone’s guess. But fans are hoping Sherman-Palladino will give the beloved sidekick a better ending than what she had in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
