Emily Gilmore made a few failed attempts at setting up her daughter, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham), on Gilmore Girls. But Kelly Bishop, the actor who played Emily, had better luck with Graham. Bishop once suggested Graham date her now-boyfriend, Peter Krause.

In her 2016 memoir, Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls, (and Everything in Between), Graham opened up about the dynamic between her and Bishop.

According to Entertainment Weekly, her “TV mom” went above and beyond. That meant serving as a maternal figure to Graham herself, not just playing her mother on Gilmore Girls

“From the start of the show Kelly [Bishop] named herself my TVM, or TV mom, by which she meant she was taking her character’s role seriously, beyond the pages or sets and out into the real world,” Graham said.

The scope of the role for Bishop meant that she’d offer Graham advice on her love life.

Kelly Bishop once suggested Lauren Graham date Peter Krause

As Bishop told Glamour at the 2015 ATX Film Festival, she once mentioned to Graham she might hit it off with actor Peter Krause. Coincidentally, Krause is Graham’s current boyfriend.

Bishop recalled a conversation she had with Graham where they “were talking about the latest unworthy person” Graham had been dating at the time.

“She is a very bright woman, and I always thought the guys she was going out with weren’t smart enough for her because that’s going to bore you after a while,” Bishop said.

That’s when she suggested Peter Krause.

“So we’re talking about her latest problem and the fact that there’s no one out there, and I say, “You know, I’ve been watching this show I love called Six Feet Under, and there’s this guy,” Bishop said. “And she [Graham] says, “I know, Peter Krause.” And I said, “I think you two would make the greatest couple.”

As Bishop remembered it, Graham told her she already knew Krause. There might’ve been a spark there but it didn’t matter because Krause wasn’t single.

The conversation ended and Graham and Bishop went on with their work. Gilmore Girls went off the air in 2007, and a few years later, Krause and Graham found themselves working together.

Lauren Graham and Peter Krause started dating on ‘Parenthood’

Cast as brother and sister on NBC’s Parenthood, Krause and Graham started dating on the set of the hit series in 2010. At first, they kept their relationship out of the public eye.

As Graham later said, she wanted viewers to believe them as siblings on Parenthood. Because of that, the actors made the conscious decision to spend quiet nights at home.

Now having been together for a decade, Graham and Krause have made a few public appearances together.

Lauren Graham forgot Kelly Bishop told her to date Peter Krause during ‘Gilmore Girls’

After sending Graham a happy birthday email, Bishop got a reply from her TV daughter with an update on her love life. It just happens, she started dating Krause, the actor Bishop suggested she date all those years ago.

“She [Graham] writes back in March and says, ‘I didn’t tell you this, but I’ve been seeing Peter Krause since December,’” Bishop said.

She continued, saying when she and Graham met up in New York, she reminded her of their conversation about Krause. Graham didn’t remember Bishop telling her to date Krause but clearly she was right: they make a great couple.
