Friday night dinner was very important on Gilmore Girls. But one episode showed Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop) telling Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) not to come. The episode later shows some touching moments between them, but their hospital dinner was cut.

Richard Gilmore collapses in ‘Gilmore Girls’

The episode “Forgiveness and Stuff” starts with Lorelai and Emily getting into a tense conversation. That’s because Emily wants her to go to Christmas dinner, but Lorelai says she’ll have to work. Emily then dis-invites her for not making it more of a priority. Rory (Alexis Bledel) goes to the dinner party without her mother.

Rory tries to apologize and get Emily not to be mad at her mother. Lorelai is obviously sad about not going and goes to Luke’s Diner for dinner instead. Richard (Edward Herrmann) ends up collapsing at his annual Christmas party. Lorelai rushes to the hospital to support her parents with Luke (Scott Patterson).

By the end of the episode, Lorelai decides to stay at the hospital in case her parents need something. Emily asks her if she wants to get something to eat in the cafeteria, and she agrees. The episode skips to Lorelai being back at Luke’s Diner to give Luke a gift.

Graham and Bishop actually filmed the scene of the mother and daughter eating together. A clip of it is shown in a video on YouTube.

Lorelai and Emily are seen in line at the cafeteria. First, Lorelai gets jello, and Emily tells her to eat something more substantial like a stew. Lorelai does and makes sure to get two bowls so Emily will eat, even though she says she’s not hungry.

They then sit down at a table together to eat. Emily tells Lorelai to eat up, but then she starts laughing. “You just couldn’t let me out of Friday night dinner, could you?” she asks. Emily then smiles.

The line is a little corny, but the whole scene is touching. Sadly, it was cut. But the last scene of them together does show the mother and daughter have made up. Emily first felt like Lorelai didn’t care about spending time with her, and the episode ends with her figuring out Lorelai does care.

The deleted scene is similar to the episode “Scene in a Mall.” Emily, Rory, and Lorelai go to the mall together after Emily gets upset at Richard. Emily feels down after he says she’s never done anything.

They eat in the food court, and Emily eats fast food for the first time. Emily ends up saying she admires Lorelai for her work ethic. Lorelai says she learned from watching Emily. It’s another one of their rare sweet moments that happens in an unexpected place for them.
