The classic Valve video games Portal and Portal 2 made a surprise appearance during the February 2022 Nintendo Direct. The Portal: Companion Collection comes to Nintendo Switch in 2022. Nintendo welcomed the classic Portal games with an appropriate GLaDOS pun, proving that the sarcastic AI and Wheatley are still alive in Aperture Science after even more than a decade.

Nintendo announced the ‘Portal: Companion Collection’ with plenty of callbacks

After showing Klonoa coming to Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Direct revealed an image of the Companion Cube falling through a blue portal with a punny tagline: “We’re so ‘GLaD’ you’re here!”

Chell wakes up in her Relaxation Vault from the first Portal as the music begins. Before long, the Portal Gun comes into view. And, of course, Nintendo could not help making a few “the cake is a lie” jokes through the Portal: Companion Collection trailer.

The first Portal released on October 10, 2007, for Windows, Xbox 360, and later on PlayStation 3. Back then, it caught the attention of gamers looking for a new indie game and it burst into a huge hit. Valve knew they had to make a sequel.

Meanwhile, Portal 2 came out on April 18, 2011, for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. In addition to the return of GLaDOS, Valve introduced the Personality Core Wheatley in Portal 2.

The ‘Portal: Companion Collection’ brings the ‘Portal 2’ multiplayer to Nintendo Switch

The Portal: Companion Collection for Nintendo Switch trailer showed the classic mechanics, like the Portal turrets and Weighted Storage Cubes.

And Nintendo even intends to bring the Portal 2 multiplayer to Nintendo Switch.

Inspired by Left 4 Dead co-op play, Valve created an entire two-player campaign for Portal 2. Players control two robots, ATLAS and P-Body, as they go through GLaDOS’ test chambers.

It focused more on cooperative gameplay with an emphasis on communication. However, Nintendo gave no word on if The Portal: Companion Collection would have crossplay.

The Nintendo YouTube channel uploaded a second trailer for the Aperture Science puzzle game

The Nintendo Direct then continued, giving fans glimpses at games like Live A Live, Cuphead DLC, and Mario and Luigi racing in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. However, Nintendo had another surprise for Portal fans when they uploaded a second Portal: Companion Collection trailer, different from the Nintendo Direct sneak peek.

“Welcome to the Aperture Science computer-aided Enrichment Center,” the description read on the Nintendo YouTube channel.

The second trailer even gave a glimpse at Wheatley in Portal 2. GLaDOS voice actor Ellen McLain crackled over the trailer with iconic lines from classic Valve games.

“Break the laws of spatial physics, solve mind-bending puzzles, and face off against a power-mad AI when Portal and Portal 2 warps onto Nintendo Switch in 2022 with the Portal: Companion Collection!” the description said.

And fans can only hope that this is only the start of more Valve games coming to Nintendo Switch like the Half-Life series.
