‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Among Most Tweeted About Shows — What Other Series Made the List?

After 17 seasons on air, Grey’s Anatomy has become a staple of scripted television. The ABC medical drama ensnared fans from its first season back in 2005, and it continues to pull on their heartstrings more than 15 years later. With the iconic Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) at the forefront, the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital tackle serious subjects and ailments — even COVID-19 during its most recent outing. The show returns with new episodes this fall, and viewer excitement is evident in its Twitter presence.

Grey’s Anatomy is approaching season 18

Even after 17 seasons, Grey’s Anatomy is still going strong. In fact, the ABC series is approaching its eighteenth season, which arrives this fall. Despite whispers that Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 could be the show’s final outing, it was greenlit for another, with several original cast members renewing their contracts.

Of course, fans are still waiting for the big announcement: that the show will come to a close at long last. With cast members like Pompeo only renewing their contracts for another year, Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 could easily mark the ending. Ultimately, it will be up to series creator Shonda Rhimes and Pompeo to decide that.

In 2019, Karey Burke — entertainment chief at ABC — said as much during a Television Critics Association panel. According to Vanity Fair, the network trusts the pair to decide when to call it quits:

“We love them. They are as deep a part of the fabric of ABC as anyone, and certainly it will be up to them whether or not they want to continue the show.”

Excitement among fans is ramping up as Grey’s Anatomy approaches a new season — both online and off. Twitter appears to be one of the top spots for viewers to discuss the series and speculate about what’s next. The social media platform revealed its most-discussed fall shows earlier this week, placing Grey’s Anatomy among the top 10. In fact, according to Deadline, the medical drama is No. 2 on the list. That’s an impressive feat for such a long-running series.

Of course, the fact that Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 tackled the COVID-19 crisis could have contributed to online conversations. It’s a unique angle and one that many can probably relate to after the past year. The fact that the series has two separate seasons airing throughout 2021 probably drew more attention as well.

What shows made the list alongside Grey’s Anatomy?

When it comes to Twitter’s most-discussed TV shows, Grey’s Anatomy finds itself in good company. The show came in at No. 2, only second to The Bachelor franchise, which consists of The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, and The Bachelor in Paradise. With fans regularly reacting to the reality show’s twists and turns, it makes sense these series would top the list.

Falling behind Grey’s is Netflix’s Sex Education at No. 3 and Riverdale at No. 4. Season 3 of Sex Education arrives this September, while Riverdale Season 5 kicked off on Aug. 11.

Succession, This Is Us, 9-1-1, The Voice, Chicago Fire, and Grey’s spinoff Station 19 are also among the top 10. If anything, dramas seem to dominate the social-media conversations — likely because they give fans too many feelings to tweet about.
