In the new episode of Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 on Dec. 9, Lynn Chen, who plays Dr. Michelle Lin, returns to the ABC medical drama. It also looks like viewers will see a lot more from the character because the actor was just bumped up to recurring status. So who is Dr. Lin on Grey’s Anatomy? Here’s everything you need to know about the new Head of Plastic Surgery.

It’s possible you’ve seen Chen in one of her projects prior to Grey’s Anatomy Season 18. The actor behind Dr. Lin has popped up as Mrs. Wong in The Affair and Mimi in Shameless. Her voice was also featured in an episode of Netflix’s Big Mouth. Chen just made her directorial debut with I Will Make You Mine in 2020.

Meanwhile, Grey’s Anatomy fans can find Chen on Instagram under the handle @mslynnchen. Ahead of the Dec. 9 episode, the actor also posted a fun photo alongside James Pickens Jr. (Dr. Richard Webber), Sylvia Kwan (Dr. Mabel Tseng), Jake Borelli (Dr. Levi Schmitt), and Chandra Wilson (Dr. Miranda Bailey).

“Nobody takes a selfie like @therealjamespickens – such steady arms!!! Excited to be back on @greysabc tonight,” Chen captioned the selfie with her Grey’s Anatomy castmates.

Dr. Michelle Lynn is the new Head of Plastic Surgery in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 18

In case you need a refresher, Dr. Lin was in the first episode of Grey’s Anatomy Season 18. The Grey Sloan team interviewed the surgeon for the new Head of Plastic Surgery position following Dr. Jackson Avery’s (Jesse Williams) exit and the physician shortage due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. But initially, Dr. Lin had some concerns about the residents.

In the premiere, Dr. Lin told Bailey and Richard that the residents weren’t where she needed them to be. So Richard told Dr. Lin that he was determined to bring them up to speed.

Now, Richard has been working with the residents for the first few episodes, and it seems like they’re really progressing. But will it be enough to impress Dr. Lin? Per Variety, ABC says the new character “teaches by doing and relies on the residents’ abilities to keep up with her.”

Meanwhile, it seems Dr. Lin will be helping the Grey Sloan Memorial team with their hiring process. In the description for Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 7 on Dec. 9, the Head of Plastics will join Bailey at a recruitment fair to — hopefully — hire more doctors for the hospital. But the synopsis reveals the two surgeons are “ill-prepared” for the event.

For now, Grey’s Anatomy fans will have to wait and see where the writers take Dr. Lin. But with Chen’s recurring status, many viewers are hoping the character will bring some fresh new storylines for season 18 — and beyond.
