‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Fans Don’t Believe Nick Marsh and Meredith Grey’s Romance in Season 18
Many Grey’s Anatomy fans approached Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) new love interest, Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), with caution when he was reintroduced in the season 18 premiere. Some viewers were initially worried whether the returning character could compete with Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), Cormac “McWidow” Hayes (Richard Flood), and even Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti). Now, the ABC medical drama is a few episodes into the new season, and it seems like many Grey’s Anatomy fans still aren’t convinced by Meredith and Nick’s romance.

When Nick met Meredith in Grey’s Anatomy Season 14, many fans hoped to see the two together. But after the general surgeon saved the transplant surgeon’s kidney, he disappeared. Nevertheless, Nick returned in the season 18 premiere, and he’s been hitting it off with Meredith as she splits time between Minnesota and Seattle.
Now, it seems Meredith and Nick might receive more screen time together in Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 6, “Every Day Is a Holiday (With You).” In the previews, Nick suggests that Meredith should stay with him at a cabin for Thanksgiving. Of course, the general surgeon has to fly back to Seattle to be with her kids. However, her flight is canceled because of the weather, which means Meredith and Nick could deepen their relationship soon.

Before episode 6 of Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 was released on Nov. 18, ABC dropped a teaser of Meredith and Nick flirting with each other before Thanksgiving. Then many viewers sounded off in the comments, sharing how they really felt about the match. On Instagram, one fan commented that they “want Hayes.” Then another suggested that they weren’t happy about all the Nick scenes.
“Stop forcing Nick on my screen,” a viewer wrote on Instagram. “I don’t want him.”
Meanwhile, some Grey’s Anatomy fans just aren’t sure about Nick and Meredith together. Following the Nov. 11 episode, a fan on Reddit commented the couple feels “off” and “forced.” Then they theorized that the ABC drama could be “building a huge plotline” down the line. Many other viewers have also begun wondering whether Nick is real because he hasn’t been seen with anyone but Meredith.
But regardless, a few Grey’s Anatomy fans speculated that the issue isn’t necessarily Nick, but rather “the entire Minnesota storyline and how it doesn’t match up with the rest of the show.” Then another viewer wondered whether people will warm up to Nick and Meredith “once we [see] him more integrated” with other characters.”

Although many Grey’s Anatomy fans don’t seem to believe in Meredith and Nick’s romance, it’s possible viewers will be won over eventually. When Speedman joined the medical drama as a series regular, Pompeo claimed that the “audience will feel” the chemistry between Nick and Meredith.
Meanwhile, it seems Speedman is aware of the general response from Grey’s Anatomy fans. But he’s hopeful he can win them over soon.
“[The fans] had some opinions early on, but I think I’m winning them over. I’m not sure,” Speedman said during On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Nov. 18. “But they were very passionate right away. … They didn’t take too kindly to it. So we’ll see how that works out by the end of the season.”
