What is it that sets a movie or a show apart from others? The most basic and complicated answer is, “the way it makes us feel.” To appeal to most people, a TV show must bring out the viewer’s biggest emotions, and according to some people, Grey’s Anatomy does it exceptionally well with many scenes.

The proof is in the fact that you can ask any group of Grey’s Anatomy fans what their favorite moment may be, and they will all have a different opinion. Some will choose the moments that make them laugh, but many will choose the most intense scenes. They are the ones that make us teary-eyed because they are so powerful and heartbreaking.

As Grey’s Anatomy enters its 18th season it is once again rated as one of the best primetime shows on ABC. Therefore, it seems like a good moment to consider all the emotional moments of this prime-time drama, because it is this aspect of it that keeps fans coming back for more season after season.

They are the moments that have made us laugh, cry, feel anger, and more. Every episode provides us with a roller coaster of emotions. Admittedly, most of the moments center around Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). As proven in season 16, episode 8, appropriately named “My Shot,” Meredith is put to the test in front of the medical board. What triggered this event for our favorite character?

At the end of season 15, a little girl is in desperate need of a procedure, but her dad does not have money for it. Meredith puts her daughter’s name on the forms and commits insurance fraud. The transgression is first caught by DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) and then Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.).

DeLuca takes responsibility and goes to jail first, though he had not played a part in the fraud. Meredith cannot accept it, so she confesses. She goes to jail and is sentenced to community service while awaiting review from the medical board.

Fans talk about the most powerful moment

The trial focuses mostly on friends and colleagues talking about the many mistakes that Meredith has made in her career so far. It is a walk down memory lane of her career and life. We are even reminded of bittersweet moments with her deceased husband, Derek (Patrick Dempsey).

However, after having Dr. Castello (Mike McColl) say that she was “cavalier about the law and her professional life”, the emotions get the best of Meredith. She is no longer able to sit in silence, and she comes out swinging. The fans loved it!

In fact, one Reddit user and Grey’s Anatomy fan commented that they “SOBBED at this scene. So powerful and heartbreaking. I feel like Ellen phones in her acting a lot of the time these days, but man can she bust it out when she wants to.”

To narrow down just one or two of the most touching Grey’s Anatomy scenes would be impossible. With 17 seasons already out and more to come, there have been a lot of things happening to the characters.

There are storylines that include the loss of April Kepner’s (Sarah Drew) first son, Samuel. He died and then Harriet was born by cesarean without medications on a kitchen table. Or when Bailey (Chandra Wilson) didn’t have her husband by his side for her the birth of their son Tuck because he was having surgery following a car accident, so George filled in.

Only one thing is known for sure. Loss is something Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital’s staff know a lot about. However, Meredith is one of the people most affected by a lot of it. She has lost more people than any other character on the show. She has also suffered attacks in her hospital, frequent personal issues, and most recently a near-death experience with coronavirus (COVID-19) and a return of many ghosts from her past.
