When April Kepner (Sarah Drew) left Grey’s Anatomy, many viewers thought she took Jackson Avery’s (Jesse Williams) daughter, Harriet, with her. However, over the past few seasons, the custody arrangement that Jackson and April have looks amicable. In real life, Williams’ custody with his ex is entirely different and considered “high conflict.”

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: What happened to Harriet Kepner-Avery?

April Kepner left Jackson Avery at the end of Grey’s Anatomy Season 14. She married Matthew (Justin Bruening), the man she left at the altar. However, she still lives in Seattle and provides medical care to homeless communities. When season 15 began, viewers wondered where their daughter, Harriet Kepner-Avery went.

Then, in Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 Episode 11, Jackson brought Harriet to the hospital to see her grandmother, Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen). Tom Koracick (Greg Germann) and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) operated on Catherine to remove her tumor. They saved her life, and she commented about how happy she was that she could still chase Harriet.

Harriet didn’t appear in Grey’s Anatomy again until the season 17 premiere. In a flashback, Jackson recalled when his girlfriend, Vic (Barrett Doss), knocked on his door wearing nothing but a puffy coat. He had Harriet at the time and had to shield her eyes. Vic broke up with Jackson, stating she wasn’t a “stepmom.”

“You’re not a stepmom,” Harriet repeats.

Jackson Avery and April Kepner share custody of Harriet in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Viewers might not recall that April and Jackson went through a divorce in Grey’s Anatomy Season 12. At first, things turned hostile when Jackson tried to fight for full custody of their unborn child. In response, April filed for a restraining order against Jackson.

However, during a conversation with his lawyer, the surgeon realized that he should fix their child’s situation. It was during season 12 that April and Jackson agreed to raise their child together as friends. From the few episodes Harriet appeared in since April left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, it is evident that the couple continues to share custody of their daughter amicably.

Jesse Williams real-life custody agreement is nothing like Jackson Avery’s

On Grey’s Anatomy, Jackson Avery settled everything about their daughter, Harriet, with April Kepner out of court. However, in real life, Williams and his ex-wife, Aryn Drake-Lee, are in the midst of a three-year divorce. They clashed over child custody and child support, and things still have not settled down.

According to TMZ, on April 12, a judge ordered Williams and his ex-wife to participate in “high conflict” parenting courses to attempt to fix things. The online program is a 6-session parenting course that provides strategies for solving conflicts between co-parents. Hopefully, it helps, and their custody arrangement could become more like Jackson and April’s on Grey’s Anatomy.
