Quite frankly, the Grey’s AnatomyStation 19 crossover romance between Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) and Vic Hughes (Barrett Doss) surprised everyone. Jackson just broke off his serious relationship with Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary). Meanwhile, Vic is still grieving her fiancé, Lucas Ripley (Brett Tucker), who died in season 2 of the spinoff series. Now, it seems like Jackson and Vic’s relationship is heating up in Grey’s Anatomy, but how will their time together affect Station 19? The third season premieres midseason, and a lot is going to happen.

Why did Jackson and Vic get together on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’?

Following the Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 premiere, showrunner Krista Vernoff shared her thoughts on Vic and Jackson’s blossoming relationship. And it seems Vernoff believes their painful pasts pushed them together.

“I think that it’s human behavior,” the showrunner revealed to Entertainment Tonight. “Often we comfort ourselves with something new when we’ve been through something painful. It happens with great frequency and I’m interested in exploring the edges of human behavior.”

Vernoff also explained how Jackson and Vic’s romance will move forward in the 16th season of Grey’s Anatomy, pointing out that it will be a “slow build.” But, as per usual, it will be messy.

“The decision-making around it was a gut feeling,” Vernoff said. “It was just a gut feeling. I knew that it was time for Maggie and Jackson to break up at the end of last season.”

“I took over Station 19 and was looking at all the moving pieces and I just had a feeling about these two,” she continued. “And so, we tried it and the whole storyline is exciting to me. The complexity of it all is really interesting. It’s been a long time since Grey’s had a break-up this messy.”

Barrett Doss was surprised by the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’-‘Station 19’ crossover romance between Vic and Jackson

With Vernoff’s “gut feeling” decision to put two unlikely characters together, it’s easy to see why everyone was surprised by the match. But, hey, unpredictability is why fans love Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy, right? Regardless, even Doss was shocked by the romance between Jackson and Vic in the flagship series.

“It was a total surprise to me,” Doss told ET. “I think that it’s a really interesting pairing actually, and I’m as excited as everyone else is to see where it goes. But, I was totally surprised.”

That said, the actress is intrigued by Vic’s growth following Ripley’s death. She’s also ready to see how her Station 19 character deals with her romance with Jackson.

“There has been a time jump,” Doss said of the Grey’s Anatomy premiere episode. “But what’s so cool about the way that this romance has started to play out, is that we’re really only seeing part of it.”

Nevertheless, Doss is also ready to dive into Station 19. And when speaking with ET, she teased what’s to come when the ABC show returns in 2020.

“I’m excited for when Station 19 picks up again and you get to see Vic’s experience of this relationship from her point of view, if that is where it’s going.”

Will Jackson and Vic break up before ‘Station 19’ starts?

So where will Jackson and Vic’s relationship be once Grey’s Anatomy reaches midseason and Station 19 picks up? It looks like Doss doesn’t know if the couple is still together or broken up by the to-be-determined premiere. And the actress noted Station 19 production is still in its “early days.”

“I have no idea where this storyline’s going honestly and I’m excited to see. But I think we do get to see more of how she’s dealing with the loss of Ripley in context to Station 19,” the actress told ET. “And then, how this experience with Jackson has taken her by surprise. Whether or not it actually continues, we don’t know yet; I don’t even know yet.”

But, even if we don’t know the fate of Vic and Jackson when Station 19 returns, fans will likely see some closure for Vic.

“You’ll definitely see Vic dealing with the aftermath of her loss [following Ripley’s death] and how that impacts her in a day-to-day way,” Doss said. “There’s a lot of stuff to look forward to but we do get to see Vic’s point of view. And more of her internal life as we start our season. So maybe it’ll give people some of what they’re looking for.”

Unfortunately, Doss didn’t reveal what’s going to happen between Jackson and Vic in the upcoming episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. However, the actress did reveal there’s still plenty to look forward to for Vic when Station 19 returns next year — with or without the crossover romance.
