Ellen Pompeo is Grey’s AnatomyAfter 17 seasons, there’s no question. The show has grown and changed a lot since the beginning. The Shondaland hit always had a full cast of characters, and fans follow many threads at once. There are those who wonder what would happen if Pompeo left the role of Meredith Grey.

Would Grey’s Anatomy survive? According to some fans on Reddit, not only could Grey’s outlast Pompeo’s exit, getting Meredith Grey out of the picture might actually be a good thing.

Meredith Grey is the undisputed star of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Grey’s Anatomy has very many iconic characters. Derek Shepherd comes to mind. Even though he’s no longer off the show, Patrick Dempsey’s Dr. McDreamy was much beloved by fans. Cristina Yang, played by Sandra Oh, was also a classic Grey’s character.

Even Izzie’s ex Denny is still remembered by fans to this day, mostly because of the ghost sex he had with Izzie when she hallucinated him. These characters weren’t on every season of Grey’s.

The original cast members are fewer and farther between, but Meredith Grey continues on. There’s talk about the show being canceled when Pompeo no longer wants to do the show. She’s already considering leaving.

Pompeo has dedicated almost two decades to the show and may want to move on to other projects. But for some fans, Pompeo exiting the show wouldn’t be a bad thing. Meredith Grey has her fair share of haters.

Not all fans actually like Meredith Grey

A fan recently posted on Reddit that “Meredith Grey is the worst character on this show.” The post wasn’t exactly popular on the anonymous social networking site, but some Grey’s fans agreed. In fact, another Redditor was so inspired that they wrote a full 10,000 characters on the subject, which is Reddit’s limit.

The commenter agreed that Meredith is basically a trash character. “I find her to be so moody, self-righteous, condescending, and just boring. She has the personality of cardboard, or more generously, a 80-year-old lady,” they wrote.

The commenter went on to explain that Meredith is constantly shifting blame for her own mistakes, or uses grieving as an excuse for her poor treatment of others. A few fans, at least, aren’t buying it.

Despite many Redditors arguing the opposite, there were a few that agreed with the commenter’s diatribe against Meredith Grey. Some Redditors believe that Meredith was actually more likable in earlier seasons, or that she has her moments, good and bad.

Most ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fans still stan Meredith Grey

Again, the Reddit post was relatively unpopular. That’s because the majority of Grey’s fans don’t want to hear anything negative about their beloved Meredith. Her defenders were plentiful on the post.

One fan posted a full five paragraphs on Meredith’s treatment of Lexi, Maggie, and Amelia. When one poster claimed that Meredith was cruel to them after Derek died, this fan wrote a whole essay defending Meredith.

Other Redditors agreed that Meredith’s behavior toward Lexi, Maggie, and Amelia was problematic, even though they do like Meredith. It’s possible to have mixed feelings about a character, or like a character without liking everything they do.

The same often happens in real life. It’s almost impossible to agree with every single thing a friend or family member does, but that doesn’t mean there’s no love there. As one fan said, “I don’t hate her but it always bothered me the way she treated first Lexi then Maggie then Amelia when Derek died.” Shonda Rhimes is famous for creating complicated characters, who fans love, hate, and love to hate. Meredith is just another example.
