After over a decades-worth of extraordinary character development, Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) left Grey’s Anatomy. On Jan. 10, Chambers announced his departure from the Shondaland series. ABC also revealed the actor’s final episode already aired on Nov. 14. And as of this writeup, Alex has yet to receive a proper sendoff. The last time Chambers’ character appeared on Grey’s Anatomy, Alex supported his “person,” Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), through her medical board hearing. So naturally, fans are wondering who Meredith’s new person will be after losing both Alex and Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh).

Chambers’ exit from Grey’s Anatomy is devastating for longtime fans. However, it’s likely the characters will continue on. Remember the carousel never stops turning. But even so, Grey’s Anatomy fans wondered whether Meredith even needs someone to be her person.

In recent years, Meredith has proven time and time again that she is the sun and she’s perfectly capable of handling things on her own. She has also built a stable support system in Seattle and doesn’t necessarily need to rely on one sole person to be whole.

“I am happy Justin chambers stayed as long as he did so Meredith had time to grow with Alex as her best friend and person, in the absents of Cristina,” a fan wrote on Twitter. “I think with the help of mer therapist she really doesn’t need one person. Mer now knows she has a village and is a mentor.”

Meanwhile, other fans suggested a possible Grey’s Anatomy finale could stem from Meredith choosing herself as her person — and it goes in the complete opposite direction.

On Reddit, a user theorized Meredith will become her own person and learn “to be completely on her own with minimal ties with Seattle.” Then, as a result, Meredith will move out of the city, leaving everything behind in the finale.

Jo Karev (Wilson)

With Alex gone, many Grey’s Anatomy fans believe Jo (Camilla Luddingson) will become Meredith’s new person, depending on how the character makes his grand exit.

In the past few seasons, Meredith has shown up for Jo in ways we weren’t expecting after Jo first appeared in the ninth season. And given their mutual loss of Alex — regardless of how the show writes him out  — Jo and Meredith might lean on each other to fill the gap.

“Maybe Jo. They have grown closer over the seasons, and they will both lose Alex,” a fan wrote on Reddit.

Jo and Mer have been getting really close. I’d bet money on it being her,” another fan added. “They also get to push more female empowerment which Grey’s seem to want to push more and more of lately.”

Cormac “McWidow” Hayes

Comac Hayes, aka McWidow (Richard Flood), replaced Alex as Grey Sloan Memorial’s head of pediatric surgery. But will he also take on the role as Meredith’s new person?

Thus far, we’ve seen Cristina’s gift hitting it off with Meredith. However, some fans think Meredith’s relationship with McWidow will become a friendship versus a full-blown romance. A fan wrote:

After news I think McWidow will be her friend and not love interest (or short love interest and then friend). There is a little possibility Krista will tank Merluca and Deluca is not leaving. But guy has screentime with Mer and seems like here to stay. Plus he has connection with Cristina so them being friends won’t be completely random.

That said, some fans weren’t convinced. “Her person can’t be McWidow I will sue,” a Redditor wrote. “I loved that Meredith had her person and the person she wanted to be with. Like separate.”

Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) are also viable candidates to become Meredith’s person on Grey’s Anatomy. To some, it may seem like a bit of a cop-out, since they’re already sisters. However, it would also be nice to see the show nurture the trio more than they have in the past.

“I hope they focus more on the relationship between Amelia and Maggie and Mer,” a fan wrote. “I’d love Meredith to get closer with her sisters.”

Then when another fan replied, noting the relationship feels “forced,” the original poster wondered “if the writers paid more attention … to her relationship with her sisters and wrote richer scenes with them, it wouldn’t feel so forced.”

They added, “Meredith was much closer, and had many more meaningful scenes with Alex and Cristina than with either Maggie or Amelia.”

Quite frankly, most of these fan theories could happen. At this point, the show has no bounds. And no matter what happens on Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith is going to be just fine. So let’s just pray Alex is given an ending that suits his character.
