Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 reunited diehard fans of the ABC show with some of its beloved former characters. Throughout its 16-year run, several Grey Sloan doctors have died tragically on the series. One of the most devastating deaths on Grey’s was Lexie Grey’s (Chyler Leigh), the sister of Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo)

Although they saw each other on the Catherine Fox Award winner’s death beach, did Meredith and Lexie get a proper goodbye? Here’s what some fans have to say.

Meredith and Lexie briefly talked to each other in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17

Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 watchers first met Lexie in season 4. She entered the show as a surgical intern. During the season 3 finale, Lexie also confided in Dr. George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) that she and Meredith are half-sisters. The two share a father, Thatcher Grey (Jeff Perry). However, they never grew up together, as Meredith’s mother, Ellis Grey (Kate Burton), divorced Thatcher and moved away when she was a child.

Although Meredith took some time to warm up to Lexie, they eventually got closer as the seasons progressed. The sisters lived together at Ellis’s old house and often supported each other at Seattle Grace hospital. Their romantic lives also collided when Lexie started dating Derek Shepherd’s best friend, Mark Sloan

Unfortunately, Meredith and Lexie only spent four years getting to know each other before she died. In season 8, Meredith, Lexie, Mark, Derek, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), and their pilot became stranded after their plane crashed. Even though they split, Mark and Lexie expressed their love for each other when she died on the scene. However, she didn’t get to tell Meredith goodbye. In season 17, Meredith contracted COVID-19. During season 17, episode 10, “Breathe,” she sees Lexie on a beach as she questions her fate. The sisters caught up throughout the episode, Lexie and Mark reveal that they got back together in the afterlife.

Why some fans don’t believe Meredith and Lexie got ‘closure’ in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17

While on the beach, Meredith and Lexie shared several heartwarming moments. As she pushed Meredith on a swing, the Grey Sloan owner discussed her kids and how much she misses them. Meredith also told Lexie and Mark that she wishes they didn’t die and thinks about the couple all the time. At the end of the episode, Lexie encouraged Meredith to fight her COVID-19 diagnosis and live for the loved ones she has on Earth.

Despite its heartfelt times, some Reddit fans wanted to see more from Meredith and Lexie’s interactions. Several Grey’s watchers pointed out that Lexie never told her sister how much she loved her at the beach. The doctor wanted to tell Meredith in person before she died in season 8. However, other fans think Lexie was the perfect person to convince Meredith to “breathe” again.

“That CANNOT be all we see. I need CLOSURE. LEXIE NEVER GOT TO SAY ILY TO MEREDITH LIKE SHE WANTED TO BEFORE SHE DIED,” one Reddit commenter said.

‘Grey’s’ fans enjoyed seeing Meredith and Mark on screen again

Even though most Grey’s Anatomy fans saw Lexie in a season 17 trailer, Mark Sloan’s appearance wasn’t confirmed until the episode began. While Lexie played on the beach, Mark informed Meredith that he tries to protect his daughter, Sofia, and their moms, Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona, from above.

Several Reddit commenters declared that the moments between the friends were more in-depth than Meredith and Lexie’s conversations.

“The Meredith-Mark dynamic was one I always like,” one fan wrote.

“Dirty Mistresses solidarity,” another added.

“I can’t believe we just got another Slexie scene in 2021!!!!!???!!??? Omg!!! I’m emotional AF,” a third fan noted of Mark and Lexie.
