The Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 winter finale left fans confused about Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) and Owen Hunt’s (Kevin McKidd) relationship. After everything that happened, Teddy told her person that she loved him. But Owen made it clear he was done. So here’s what to expect from the couple when the Shondaland series returns in 2021.

What happened to Teddy Altman and Owen Hunt in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17

At the start of Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Owen finally confronted Teddy about her affair with Tom Koracick (Greg Germann). Everyone involved was greatly impacted by the situation. But even so, it seemed like there was no resolve. Then by the winter finale, Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) gave Teddy some solid advice.

Ultimately, Richard told Teddy to clean up her mess. He advised her to take a good look at herself to not make repeat the same pattern again. Then in a turn of events, Teddy decided to tell Owen that their daughter, Allison, was named after her best friend, who she was in love with. She admitted Allison was connected to her affair with Tom. However, she wasn’t able to pinpoint why, which only made Owen more frustrated.

“That makes so much sense,” Owen told Teddy. “Ever since our wedding day, I tried to piece it together. Our history, searching for when you changed and became someone that was capable of doing things that I couldn’t understand. And it turns out that you didn’t change. Turns out I just never really knew you.”

He later added, “You named our daughter after a lie.”

What to expect from Teddy and Owen when ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17 returns

For now, Grey’s Anatomy fans will have to wait until March 2021 to find out what happens to Teddy and Owen. But in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, executive producers Andy Reaser and Meg Marinis confirmed the relationship isn’t finished yet.

“They still have a very messy road ahead of them,” Marinis said of Teddy and Owen. “They still have a lot of things to work out.”

The EP also explained Owen’s reaction to Teddy’s relationship with Allison, pointing out that it hasn’t been that long since he found out about Tom.

“This admission from Teddy just threw Owen a huge curveball,” Marinis said. “The other thing I often remind viewers is that we’re in a short timeframe in these six episodes. So it’s not like Owen has had all this time to fully come to terms with what happened between Teddy and Koracick.”

Marinis continued, “It’s still very, very raw for him and now she just told him this thing, which completely blows his mind because of how long they’ve known each other and she’s never mentioned that before.”

Meanwhile, Raver previously commented on Teddy’s actions ahead of the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere. In an interview with TV Insider from July 2020, the actor revealed what her character needs to work on before moving forward. So hopefully, viewers will see some growth when the Shondaland series returns in 2021.

“Teddy needs to do a lot of work on herself,” Raver said. “I think Teddy had a lot of trauma. Now we’re going to explore what that [is]. … Her go-to is to fix things and do things for people. It all comes from a good place, but it definitely comes from her needing to do the work because her behavior is definitely reflective of some issues that she has to address.”
