[Spoiler alert: The Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere and episode 3.] ABC promised the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere would leave everyone’s jaw on the floor. But honestly, we still weren’t prepared. At the end of the extended episode, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) returned over five years after Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) said her final farewell. Just when viewers were able to process what was going on, the moment was cut short by the end credits. Luckily, the new Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 trailer has more shots of Meredith and Derek’s reunion — and yes, it’ll make you emotional.

Throughout the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere, viewers watched as Meredith dealt with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The general surgeon struggled as her patients died and she had to make multiple phone calls to their families. Then at the end of the episode, Cormac “McWidow” Hayes (Richard Flood) found Meredith collapsed on the parking lot pavement.

Suddenly, Meredith wasn’t at Grey Sloan Memorial. Rather, she was transported to a sunny beach. But there was still cause for worry. McWidow’s voice called out Meredith’s name in the background. But as the voice grew louder, it wasn’t McWidow screaming — it was McDreamy.

“Oh my god,” Meredith exclaimed, echoing Grey’s Anatomy fans across the nation.

“Meredith!” Derek said, looking as dreamy as ever as he waved his arms at his wife.

The Meredith and Derek moment in the premiere was far too short. But don’t fret. The Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 3 promo trailer promised MerDer is coming back on Thursday, Nov. 19. The preview for the episode — titled “My Happy Ending” — picks up where the season starter left off. Meredith is still on the beach with Derek standing in front of her.

“No, your not McDreaming. This is happening,” the narrator says.

Of course, Grey’s Anatomy fans already know the Meredith-Derek beach scene is a dream or hallucination. Derek died in season 11, after all. So what exactly does this mean about the lead’s health? As the teaser continues, it seems Meredith doesn’t die because she’s getting tests done back at Grey Sloan. However, there’s still cause for worry.

“God forbid this gets any worse,” Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) tells Meredith as she rests on a hospital bed.

Later, even Meredith is worried about her life. “If I fall asleep, I’m afraid I might not wake up,” she says.

At the end of the trailer, the doctors at Grey Sloan aren’t able to wake Meredith. The preview cuts back to the MerDer beach scene.

“I miss you,” Meredith says. Then as Derek takes a step forward, he replies, “I know.”

After the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere dropped the surprising reunion between Meredith and Derek, Pompeo, Dempsey, and showrunner Krista Vernoff opened up about the latest cameo.

“It was really special,” Dempsey told Deadline. “It’s crazy how much time has passed, but it really was so comforting, and lovely, and inspiring to go back, and to work together, to see everybody.”

Pompeo also pointed out that the Grey’s Anatomy team — including Dempsey — wanted to bring some light amid the pandemic.

“We wanted to bring something to this moment,” she said. “There’s just so much darkness, and we knew that coming together would be a little ray of light. And so, I think we had the same idea, at the core, to want to help people and bring a smile to people’s faces.”

Meanwhile, Vernoff teased how much longer Dempsey will reprise his McDreamy role. “It’s more than the one scene you saw,” she said.

As for the status of Meredith’s health, it looks like everyone will just have to wait and see when Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 returns with its third episode on Thursday, Nov. 19.

“We started the episode with Meredith dreaming of a beach, and at the end of the episode, she’s dreaming of the beach where Derek happens to be,” Vernoff said. “And that’s what we know so far.”
