It’s time to grab some tissues, Grey’s Anatomy fans. As anticipated, the winter finale is coming on Thursday, Dec. 16, and it looks like another tragedy could shake the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial. The Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 8 promo trailer just hinted that Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) — and possibly Cormac Hayes (Richard Flood) — will die. So here’s a breakdown of the preview and what to expect next.

[Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers about Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 8.]

The ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 18 Episode 8 teases the possibility of Owen Hunt’s death

The promo trailer for Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 8, “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” starts with a mini update on Farouk Hunt (Bardia Seiri). Megan Hunt’s (Abigail Spencer) son isn’t doing well, but Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) offers her some hope. He tells Megan and Owen that there’s an organ donor, and the heart is a match for Farouk.

Meanwhile, Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) tells Owen she wants “eyes on the heart,” and Hayes says he’s coming along. However, the organ transport goes horribly wrong.

In the Grey’s Anatomy preview, Owen sits in the passenger seat of the organ transplant vehicle. Then the driver seems to have a medical emergency, and the car crashes in the woods. The vehicle is crushed, and some fans are worried Owen could be dead. That said, Hayes’ whereabouts are unknown. Although he seemingly said he would join the trip, Hayes wasn’t directly shown in the car with Owen.

Meanwhile, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) seems worried. She tells someone offscreen that she needs to know what happened. But no one has answers. Then Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) says something is “insane” in a voiceover, and no other context is given. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) also expresses some shock while she’s in her scrubs. However, once again, we don’t know what she’s talking about.

Nevertheless, the Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 8 trailer suggests that the new episode on Dec. 16 will end with a cliffhanger. Just as the promo ends with another shot of the car crash, ABC tells fans the winter finale will leave them “on the edge.”

While the Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 8 promo caused many fans to worry about the possibility of Owen’s death, the synopsis for “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” doesn’t tease any scares. The press release courtesy of ABC reveals the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial will be celebrating the holidays, and there are plenty of happy moments ahead.

In the next new episode, David Hamilton (Peter Gallagher) and Meredith will “prepare for a milestone” on their Parkinson’s disease project, which is in Minnesota. However, it seems both Meredith and Amelia will be spending some time in Seattle.

New photos from the Dec. 14 episode show Meredith talking to Hayes. Amelia also speaks with Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), who just found out that Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack) had a huge crush on her in the past. But even so, ABC’s synopsis suggests AmeLink isn’t over because Link hopes to “spend the holiday with Amelia and Scout as a family.”

Meanwhile, Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) must face a “difficult decision during surgery” in the Grey’s Anatomy winter finale. The new photos also tease a serious conversation between Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.).

Whatever happens next, it seems like episode 8 of Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 will feature storylines for most of the cast right before the holiday break. But hopefully, everyone gets out alive.
