With Grey’s Anatomy in the offseason, many fans are rewatching the series from the beginning. However, there is one thing that always bothers viewers. Fans want to know where the golf balls go that Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), Mark “McSteamy” Sloan (Eric Dane), and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) hit off the roof of the hospital.

Why did Shepherd, Sloan, and Hunt hit golf balls off the roof of the hospital?

In season 7, episode 16, the three doctors head to the roof of Seattle Grace Hospital to blow off steam by hitting golf balls. During the scene, Shepherd, Sloan, and Hunt look like they are at a driving range; however, they are against the gorgeous Seattle skyline.

“She didn’t think she needed to tell me that she couldn’t see,” Derek begins. “She figured it was, you know, not relevant. I don’t know if I’m more mad at her as her husband or as her attending.”

McDreamy is complaining about Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) withholding information about her fertility drugs causing her to lose her eyesight. Owen chimes in that Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) doesn’t think it’s his decision whether or not the two have children.

“They want to hold all the cards,” Shepherd adds.

Lastly, Sloan complains about what it’s like to negotiate with two women over the care of their daughter. The three continue to hit numerous golf balls off the roof of the building, while viewers wonder where these balls are landing.

Where do the golf balls go when the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ doctors hit them off the hospital roof?

“We are supposed to believe that there was a body of water next to the hospital, and that is where the balls fell,” one fan wrote on Reddit

However, fans who live in Seattle often point out that there is not a body of water close enough to the hospital for the balls to land in.

“Yeah, the KOMO news building (where the helipad is located) is almost a mile from Elliot Bay, the closest body of water,” another fan added. “As a Seattleite, this always bugged me.”

Although, another fan pointed out that they could be hitting them across the ambulance bay toward the hospital’s other roof. Still, others consider that the doctors could be hitting the golf balls into the large field in front of the Space Needle, except they are launching them in the opposite direction.

Some fans consider the golf ball scene a way for ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ doctors to secure new patients

“I think when they are running low on surgery, they go to the roof to hit some balls, so they get patients in the hospital,” joked another fan.

It is a running joke on Reddit that the three doctors like to hit golf balls off the roof to acquire new patients. Many fans are shocked that there was not a follow-up episode where a person gets hit with a golf ball.

Nonetheless, viewers are meant to believe that the balls are falling into a body of water. In reality, they would be smashing through car windows or falling on pedestrians’ heads.
